By the
time you are reading this I should be in Dallas giving a certification program
for groomers. I will also have the blessing of sharing time with one of my dear
families. Even though Kara passed to rainbow bridge many years ago they
have still been pawHeart of my family. So Jill, Ali and Chris and Steph...see
you soon.
Harlan
is as cute as could be...I am glad he is promised because I so would have to
keep him. Carley is stunning. And the temperaments of them both is
outstanding.

I have
been writing again for the news paper and was blessed that both of them wrote a
nice piece about my lecturing this month.

Benny and Henry join me in this photo.
I also
wish to thank all the families that have requested to be on the waiting list for
a Hyer Luv. I appreciate your trust and desire for a Hyer Luv for your
best/next fur friend. Talk to you all again when I return.

Thanks to everyone for the notes of concern for Fred and I
over the loss of Marla. It has been a hard day. Thank goodness that
we were busy. That helps take my mind off of it. Tonight will be
hard. It is when I would have been sleeping in the nursery with the
children and D so that I could supplement. The nights will be hard for a
while. Here as promised. Carley and Harlan before and after their first hair
cut.

Carley before and after.

Harlan before and after.
8-6-10
It is with a very heavy heart that I say we lost Marla due to
something vets call failure to thrive. She just never grew. Even with supplemental
feedings she didn't make it. I am sorry for myself yes but also for Jessica.
That is why I hesitate before the children are two weeks to get hopes up to
high. I never know what is on God's mind. Maybe as Carley grows Jessica
will fall in love with her. Both Harlan and Carley pass health check. They are
doing great. Eyes are open and I believe that they know their names as
they will look toward me when I call them. In another week or so I look forward
to watching their first steps. I will be doing before and after hair trims
tomorrow if I get a break from the kennel. It is my favorite trim because
they go from baby puppy to cocker puppy in one hair trim. I will certainly
post their photos before I leave for Chicago. Jessica...Harlan is fine he is
strong just as Carley is...they are both past the critical first couple of
weeks.
Wedensday I leave for Chicago for the All American Grooming
show. Then I am home for a week and I go to The Pet Pro Classic in Dallas
to give a certification course on grooming business ownership. This is a
busy month.

7-28-10
Tomorrow Fred leaves for the WI shows. My daughter
drives thru on her way to her best friends wedding in TN. I will be
watching her fur child Tanner (my Ashley's son) while her family attends the
wedding. Bonus I get to see my grandson Easton for a few moments while she
drops of Tan Man. My son's family moves into their new home. And today the
new family that I hope is going to complete the sale on my father's home moved
into his house. It has and will be a long full week.
Ok this is really a strange coincidence two of the new fur
children are going to have mothers named Jessica. I have not had something
like that happen in years. Hum if a third Jessica comes forward to claim the
third child I am going to apply to the book of world records. GRIN

Been talking to many new kennel clients this week. Each
of them realizing what makes Hyer Luv a special second home for their fur
friends. I am working on the lecture series I am giving in Dallas next
month. Seems like there is always something right. You each take care. Luv

First pup is born after a long night of labor she is almost
9oz not sure yet if she is black and tan or a sable. But I wanted you all to
know that Delaney is doing well and is very happy with her doghter. More
later. Oh side note personal. There maybe an offer on my fathers
house today please pray it goes well and God has lead the right family to this
very nice well maintained home. Luv Sam

They are strong and healthy all 8.5-9.5 oz. I am so
happy. I know those that were asking after them as potential families are

Jessica I am dedicating this entry to you. I am so sorry about
your cocker losses and I am so honored that you have waited for me to create a
fur child that fits your desires in your next cocker. I appreciate your
dedication to your past fur friends and how much they meant to you. That
was one of the things I found so appealing about your asking after a Hyer Luv
for your next child. Delaney has had her temp drop this morning. I am
prayerful that your son will be born today sometime. She is resting calmly
and has nested in her whelping box. This litter is special to me for a couple of
reasons. One this is her last litter. She has made us champion pups
and family friendly awesome children. And this litter I am trying to create
sable. It is a color that I have been infatuated with since I was blessed
by Lynn to care for her/my Ashley. Since Ashley went to Jesus I have not
found the sound temperament and depth of eyes (see into her soul) in other
breeders "stock" So I am going back to try to recreate the line that I
had the honor with Lynn to work with. The sensitivity and exceptional
intuitiveness that Ashley and her children had was amazing.

This is Tommy and Delaney. So the color combinations for
this litter could be black, black and tan and sable. The personalities
should be soft and adoring with just a spice of that curious clown that makes a
cocker such a joy to possess. Well, I am back to the nursery to sit with
her. I took the day off today because my arms ached from grooming so much
the last couple of weeks...good thing she will reward my patience by allowing me
to be with her as she brings her last lives into our home and hearts. Luv

Back to playing catch up. Been without a solid connection to
the internet for a portion of the week. I want to thank David in California for
contacting me to make sure I was doing well. Thank you.

Anne-Marie drove with Luke and Joey all the way from MN to
pick up Rory. She has since written and is enjoying her new son. Joey is the
black and tan her first Hyer Luv.

The Blanchard family also from MN with Penny. Are those not
the best looking boys!

This is Bonnie (ie Pirate) We are thrilled how well she
has acclimated to her new family. She has two sisters schnauzer's and a pom
brother.
I do not have a photo of Rylee who went to New York to a show
home but I have heard from her mom and they like her also.

As you can see I had to do both photo's...can't get one that
all three looked at me
What I did on my summer vacation...

Fred and I went to Muskegon Summer Celebration and saw
Foreiner and Styx. It was a Foreiner song that inspired Fred to ask me to
drive him to distraction for the rest of his life. And then I was blessed to be
invited to my grandfathers sisters family reunion. These are my fathers
cousins..my second cousins.

My Easton got his first hair cut. I think he looks like
grandpa Bruce. (my children's father)
Thank you Helen for consistently knowing when I need to hear
from you. Knowing my heart and when it needs your gentle touch! You
have a blessed gift!
So what is new now...the bulk of the kennel guests went home
today. I took down an hours worth of branches that were over riding our
potty area in front of the kennel. Even though it was Sunday I had 5
grooms and 5 guest nail trims. Fred cleaned and readied his dog show truck
for this coming weekend. I skimmed my baby pool. I did kennel filing and
banking and paperwork. Laundry both home and kennel. Wrote a letter to a
friend. Called my fathers neighbor and my aunt in NC. Spoke to 14 callers and 22
clients picked up their children. Jeanne came and picked up her two new
doghters. (ok hers and her sons) Cleaned the grooming room and lobby.
Vacuumed the office. Updated the web page answered 151 emails. Went to the
grocery and pharmacy. Went to lunch with Fred. Supervised a couple of play
groups. Started a list of what Fred will need to take with him to work on Dad's
house when he goes to the dog show next week. Worked with Henry as he will
go to his new home Thursday. Read a few pages of a novel and worked on my
lecture program that I will be doing in Dallas next month. Hum...sort of a full
day eh?
And my surprise. This weekend I hope to have a litter of
black and tan CROSS YOUR FINGERS and sable. Hope to have good news while Fred is
in Marshall and Albion. Please pray that the weekend will be uneventful and not
spent at the emergency vets...LOL
Last but not least Happy Birthday my beloved son in law
Tony!
Luv to each and all. Your, Sam

It was brought to my attention by one of my Hyer Luv sisters
that maybe the reason for my not posting was the potential depression over all
that has been done for my father in the last month. The 19th was his memorial
service. I have had things to deal with on the house. And seeking out and
scanning family photo's for all of the family members. I had no idea how
long it takes to scan and label photo's. Helen mentioned that the dreams I have
been having perhaps have to do with my inability to let daddy go. While these
memories and dreams have startled me at times. I think they are a part of
who I am who he created. I am blessed. But it also, NOT by Helen, was
called to my attention that a month is a long time in puppy time and I am
letting you down by not telling you all that has happened.
Two of Flirts children are in their new homes. Sydney, (Penny)
the tri roan that had my heart from the moment she was born I reluctantly (I
reread this...when I said reluctantly it had nothing to do with my choice of
family but that I really was tied to Syd/Penny please forgive me if my words
seemed insulting at all.) sent
home with Ben and Matt. And Pirate is now called Bonnie and lives in Grand
Rapids. Princess will go to Sharon in New York and will be shown. And
Rouge who doesn't have his real name yet will stay with us and be shown by Fred.
Yes, I do have photo's but I moved them from the camera to the desktop and I
will have to move them back. I needed the card to have dad's service
videoed for my brother who could not be here. So I will get the happy
family photos up at some point.
Pj and Watson's black and tan doghter will go to a different
New York family to show. Ginny and Fred have exchanged and shown each
others dogs for sometime now. Since we are keeping Lynn-Z ( Tiffany and
Watson) and she is a black and tan we are going to share with Ginny.
Jeanne was kind enough to come for a visit of LeAnne's
children. She and I are working toward selecting a doghter for her. The
second week of July Fred will meet up with a current family (they have Ginger,
Watson's sister) that live in Ohio. They will adopt Henry. Rory, Marilyn,
Monica and Melinda are cute as can be and growing like weeds. As I
mentioned to some Dr Chris came over to pick up her next Hyer Luv and I ask to
look them over. She was smitten. She said she had to remind herself
that she wanted an adult. She does agility work with her children and they
are in such good physical and emotional shape. She is another Hyer Luv
blessing her first child was Solomon (Oprah's dog) sister Zoe. Now she has
Tia renamed Lucy.
And now for the breaking news. I am trying again for
sable and black and tan. Tommy and Delaney. This will be her last
litter. I am hoping to expect children around July 17th. Keep her in your
prayers. I want to thank those that have been emailing me regarding fur
children. And those that have emailed because you have seen your friends and
neighbors with a Hyer Luv to just tell us how nice it is to see a friendly
pretty cocker again. Thank you.
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. You truly are
my family. Luv Sam

As many of you are aware when I have a family with children I
write a story for them. Here is the story for Ben and Matt of Eden Prairie
MN. I hope they like it.
The sky grew ever so dark midday on the 4th of June in the
year of our Lord
twenty-ten. The rumble of thunder could be heard through out the land. Winds
picked up from calm to blowing the masts on ships erect and flags dancing to
the beat of the thunder.
Ben was oblivious to the change in barometer he was engrossed in his
favorite book about a modern day son of the Greek gods. Percy was traveling
to his next adventure when outside Ben's window came a mighty clap of
roaring thunder and the blinding of lighting.
When he could see, dusting off his apparel, who stands before him but Percy
Jackson the same in the book that now had tumbled to the floor. Ben was not
sure to be fearful or glad but he certainly was amazed.
In the next room sprawled out on his bed was brother Matt. Unlike Ben, he
enjoyed more action and wizardry. He was deep into book seven in the Harry
Potter series thinking to himself that the author surely could not end the
series now book eight she should consider, when he was blinded by the same
lightening and defend by the clap of thunder. But instead of concern he
raced to the window to examine the weather's abrupt change. As he turned he
was greeted by Harry, Ron and Herminie in full Gryffindor regalia. He was
beside himself with delight it was Herminie that was concerned as she stated
"Now what did you boys do? Professor Dumbledore will not be able to
save us
from being expelled now" She finished with an air of superiority.
Though in separate rooms both Ben and Matt were speaking the same words to
their guests. "How did you get here? I didn't believe for a minute
you
existed. Why are you here?"
It was Percy that answered the last question first. "I am here for
adventure." To Matt, Herminie glanced before answering, around his
room
were items of Hockey which she mistook for fancy Quidich equipment.
"Well,
says she, we were on the way to the great hall for this years graduation
feast and to see who gets the house trophy when Ron broke his wand trying to
put a spell on Malfoy." OBVIOUSLY something went wrong." She said with
a
huff. "Calm down Herminie, said Harry. We will figure this out we always
land on our feet." Which they had, Ron said between giggles.
"Pardon me
sir, where exactly are we, Herminie asked Matt. Matt however ecstatic that
they had come was still scratching his head and said "you're in my
bedroom."
"That sir is sure to be true but in what land are we? She impatiently asks.
"Oh." Says Matt. "You are in Minnesota." Having
never heard of such a
place Harry took out the marauders map it did not show such a place in fact
the path of feet went from Hogwarts and walked right off the edge of the
map. Harry was perplexed. Ron was afraid his twin bothers would tell on
him
and Herminie was sure it was up to her to get them out of yet another mess.
Back in Ben's room Percy has taken a chair and the two were chatting.
Percy
was glad to be back to a place that reminded him of home but was sure that
trouble was a foot when he returns to face the gods. As Ben was walking
backwards he almost fell over his rollerblades now understanding why his
mother always mentioned putting them where they belong. He didn't know
what
to think. What kind of metrological event could have caused a character
from a book to become real? Ben hollered for Matt. When he turned around
there was Matt with a huge grin and three new friends with him. Ok that
was
too much for Ben he grabbed his lacrosse stick and said loudly "WHAT
GIVES?"
Both boys were confused almost as much as their unwilling or should I say
unexpected guests. Both Matt and Ben thought it best not to call these
guests to the attention of their parents. So they ask their new friends to
walk quietly behind them, after of course all the characters were properly
introduced to one another, down to the basement where parents only come for
laundry and to play with them on the air hockey table. It seemed like a
safe place to sort this all out. Matt was in shorts with a Pittsburgh
Penguins jersey on and Ben in the same but with a Red Wings jersey.
Herminie who always knows all the best questions and usually has the answer
before she asks was stunned with the reply she got to this assumption. "I
believe you go to a different school than we do as I have never seen you nor
these muggle items. She pointed to the various sporting gear on the floor.
You are muggles right? And are wings and penguins your houses at
school?"
Matt looked at Ben's shirt and Ben at Matt's and they both had a giggle.
"No, no Herminie these are sporting teams." They said in unison.
"Well then
they must be new as I have never heard of them play for the cup." The
brothers looked at one another when Percy piped up. "So that was some
storm.
Not sure how it brought me here. One minute I was running in the country
side and the next standing in a bedroom." " I wonder if we have to be
in the
same room when the next weather formation takes place to send us back to
where we belong." Ron just wanted to go home. He knew he would be in
trouble with his mother and didn't want to receive a howler owl from her as
he had in the past. She must not know how humiliating they are he
thought...then it came to him she knew exactly how humiliating it was. It
was Harry that then thought of everyone but the brothers to get under his
cloak of invisibility when they all heard footfalls at the top of the
stairs. "What are you boys doing down there? Mom Susan asked.
With a
startled look upon their faces the brothers at the same time said. "Nothing
mom" To which Susan replied it would not hurt them to neaten up down there
when they were finished. A big sigh of relief came from all six children
but only two could be seen. The cloak came off and all of the children sat
down. Ron being great at chess asks after the air hockey game as to how it
was played and how much he would like to try. It was Ben that said he would
show Ron and the two of them commenced to play. Harry and Percy talked at
length about metaphysical transposes which seemed to them to be the only
logical answer for how they were transported from page to play room.
Herminie was sitting too near Matt for his comfort so he went over to watch
the hockey game. Herminie gave a small pout as she found Matt very cute.
She changed her thoughts to those which Percy and Harry were discussing.
"I
agree." she said. "So that means we need to be in the same spot
exactly 12
hours from when the weather pattern first appeared." They all agreed that
would be at the stroke of Midnight. Ben and Matt thought that would pose
two problems. One it was way past their bed time and how did they know the
weather would be that bad then? Harry assured them that he had looked in
his companion pocket book of spells and potions and he knew what to do.
Percy just wanted back so he could save his friends from the lady with all
the snakes in her hair. Matt and Ben thought it best to have their four new
friends help them clean up the basement...it would go a long way toward
making their mother consider letting them stay up later. But they knew
Midnight would be out of the question so they would have to pretend to go to
bed and sleep and hid their guests in the closets until it was time to
return to the books from which they came. Returning to their bedroom after
supper they had each thought to take some fruit, bread and cheese to their
much appreciative new friends. Dad Jim hollered up for the boys to clean
up
brush their teeth and get ready for bed. Everyone was anxious. The
television could be heard from the top of the stairs. The meteorologist
stated that a similar storm front to what had past during the lunch hour was
again going to cross Eden Prairie between 11:45pm and 12:06am. He
cautioned
his viewers to put away lawn furniture and toys as the wind was going to be
50 to 75 miles an hour. Harry had a big grin on his face and Herminie was
working on her charm spell to get them back into the pages of book seven and
hopefully not too late to see who won the house trophy. Percy was the only
one of the book travelers that almost wished he could stay. But then he
realized he would have no where to live and it would be best if he went back
into his own story. Ben and Matt were relieved just to get back to their
own lives and not have to hid, let alone explain, how their library books
came to life. At 12:00am exactly the heavens became bright with light and
the deafening sound of thunder roared just as suddenly as they appeared all
of the guests disappeared again and the covers of each book slammed shut.
Ben quickly but quietly tip toed to Matt's room and both boys heaved a sigh
of relief. No matter how happy they were to meet the characters in their
favorite series of books, it was still best that they remain just that
...characters in books. Both boys went to bed as they knew the next day
they would be traveling to Michigan to bring home their new puppy. They
could not wait for their REAL LIFE adventure and were very happy to be
bringing home a new sister to play all the sports they did, ok well with in
reason of course and to be a good listening ear to their stories and
secrets. They both thought it would be safe to tell her about books coming
to life. They knew she would keep their secret. With these thoughts they
both fell deep into sleep.
Jim, Susan, Ben and Matt will welcome a sister June 6th the
tri roan girl I call Sydney. I am very excited about this family as Susan has
traveled a simular path to my own. I know that we will be family easily.
As a family they will come here to pick up their new fur doghter.
Anne-Marie also of MN who has our Joey and Luke from Carol S
in WI. has chosen to get another Hyer Luv son. I will be nurturing one of
Leanne's boys for her.
Fred is back from showing and working the cluster in
Kalamazoo. He put points on his cocker and his doxie. I ended up
re-injuring the torn muscle in my back and am flat out on the heating pad.
I have 8 grooms tomorrow so I have to rest it so I can move tomorrow. It has
been painful to one degree or other for two weeks. I injured it originally
at dad's house. So those that I promised more photos please allow me to email
them to you tomorrow. The thought of going down and up the stairs again
right now just makes me cringe.
Well, time for more pain killer and muscle relaxer. I
will leave you all now and chat again later. But first...those of you who have
served, those who have lost someone that served and those that we never knew
that showed us the cost of freedom is not free. THANK YOU is far to small
for what I really feel. God Bless each and all.

Happy
Anniversary Fred and Sam
Yup we
made it 22 years this man has managed to put up with me.
Sharon
here are the photos you ask for of Flirt's children.

And our Pirate (ar...where is my parrot) girl

Our precious Roan sons

Our just too cute tri girls

and our
stunning black and white girl.

Yesterday the Johnson's picked up Tucker new brother to Ivy
Jane. Looks like the perfect family to me!

Here is Fred working to pick out the next Hyer Luv Champion.
My thoughts and prayers are with Kim who had to spend part of
her day today at the doctor...we know all will be well chin up Kim.
I would like to give a shout out to Anne-Marie the professor
in MN who has had Joey cocker for over 12 years and is going to add one of
LeAnne's son's to her family. (there girl friend when it is said on the internet
it must be true) Luv YOU!
Puppy hugs and kisses to Deb who has been sick all week. A
Michigan wave across the pond to Janet...think of you always. To Barb and
especially Scott who face surgery for Scott tomorrow. Scott you are the
most coragous man I have ever met. May Gods loving all knowing hands touch the
doctors and be with you and Barb tomorrow and always. Amy and Vicki thank you
for abiding with me as I learn who your child shall be. And to Jax's
parents...my prayers are with you and your loss. Though Jax was not a Hyer
Luv cocker I do know his breeding and I am sure he left extraordinary memories
and a big hole in your heart...but he also made room for the next fur
child. May you be blessed. Sharon, I can not remember having over an hour
call with a "friend" in a long time. I didn't feel like we were
strangers at all in fact it was like we had so much common ground that we have
been in each others lives forever. I hope I will be honored to give you
your next big champion.
Well, family it is late and Fred leaves for a show in the
morning so I need to sleep I have to do the work of three people the next five
days...my regular work and the work of two people that Fred does. tee hee
Hyest Luv to each and all. Your, Sam

Please be happy for Mary and Kira
Kim and
Sophie
and
Carolyn and Hannah
What a busy week. Three of our children went home. I needed to
order a new computer thank you Lynn for your help. Had lots of Dad things to do.
AND Yes, my back is still out. And yes, to those that sent me advice I have
tried everything. Not sure when it will be better. But there are worse things
that happen to others so I thank God for my blessings and realize he is using
this opportunity for me to slow down a bit. (ok, it is my lie I will tell it any
way I want to.)
This week Tucker will go home with his "sister" Ivy
Jane and the Johnson's. We are considering a show home for one of the
black and tan girls and one of the parti girls out of flirt and maybe actually
two of Flirts girls and then we will show one of them also. So far all 4
are show potential. LeAnne's girls are stunning and the boys are so darn cute I
can't stand it. I am going to be very proud placing these children
in their forever homes. They are and will be a great tribute to our
breeding program.
Anyone watching the Farewell to Brooks and Dunn tonight.
I love Taylor..."20 Years together performing...wow that is like a whole
lifetime to me." Giggle since she is not even 20 yet it is a mini ha ha.
We lost a couple of our older children this week. 14 and 16
years with us. We were blessed but losing my fur children is always
hard. We will plant a couple of trees for each of them. I grieve but also
with great joy am thankful for the time that we had.
We have 25 guests this weekend for the holiday and Fred will
be in Kalamazoo at the dog shows. It would be nice if one of our boys
could win two of the days at the show then we would have another champion in the
Hyer Luv family. Luv you each and all. Your, Sam

This is Pj's little black girl. I have two families I am
considering for this stunning little one.

This is Lynn-Z. Tiffany's doghter she won Best Puppy in
Midland this past weekend. Another show child for Fred.

This is Hannah. Lynn-Z's sister. She is being
interviewed for the two families that Pj's girl is. They both will have a new
doghter this week.
Tucker is the black and tan son from Pj he will be joining his
Hyer Luv sister Ivy Jane with the Johnson family. They will take him
around Fred and my 22nd anniversary this month
.
Tucker is in the back the black and tan. Kira is the black and
tan girl in the front (she goes home tomorrow) and the black girl is in the
middle of Savannah.
Anne-Marie and Amy...the boys are growing wonderfully. I
love how they all three grab my fingers like a human baby does. I can not wait
until 4th of July when I will know more about who's son is who's.
Both Flirt and LeAnne are calm mothers and I am thrilled that
they are raising sound sane parti children. They have traveled to (Flirt's) to
two dog shows where they have been a hit. Super socialization is very important
to us to have emotionally giving children.
Dad's obituary ran in Albion's paper the Recorder. I may
print it here also. I am still having a hard time with his loss. Each day
there is "work" to do on his estate. I think it is a gift in a
way the busy keeps me from grieving. But that builds in a person's soul and I
know when it breaks it will be over...I will need a day to pick myself up off
the floor. June 19th is dad's service. A part of me looks forward to it. Several
of fathers friends will be there. And even today one of the churches that had a
fire in Albion called to say that he was the anonymous donor that sent them
money to rebuild the kitchen. They are sending a card and making a
donation in my mother's name to the foundation that dad created in her memory. I
am planning on taking all the cards that you my families have sent me and his
family and friends have sent to the cemetery so that those there can see how he
is missed and how even those that did not know him but knew me...someone he
created...me. Thank you each and everyone of you for helping me go on with
your friendship and your care of "my" fur children.

Well, I have to go lay on the heating pad again. I
apparently ripped a something something in my back under my right shoulder
area. Hurts to breath sometimes. Prayer for healing appreciated.
I was thrilled to talk with Vicki who has followed this soap
opera for many many years. Thank you for considering not IF but when you will
have your Hyer Luv.
Oh anyone really happy with their desk top computer? If
so let me know what it is and who made it. I am in the market for a new unit.

It is really late. Been working on Dad's service and the
pups. Took my daughter Kat and Grandson Easton to the airport this morning
so they could go see her best friend in TN. I love talking to all of you and
especially those parents and potential parents for our amazing children.
We have been blessed.
Luv your Sam
Welcome
a Litter of Tri's and Black and White's to Hyer Luv

The last 48 hours have been the most dramatic in my 20 years
of creating sound sane and stunning cockers. My much beloved Leanne started
having trouble. I saw it and it was on a Saturday afternoon. None of
our collection of Veterinarians were available. I knew I had to save my baby
girl...she was in trouble and that meant her children would be in trouble also..
Fred was in Flint at the dog show. My "sister" Deb started as a
kennel client referred from her vet who had/has cockers from us, then she has
cockers from us and now she and I share a heart...so she knew when I ask for
help it was serious. We went to the emergency vet as she was in trouble after
the first live birth. Turns out the placentas were intertwined. She would have
been lost and all 5 of the children still within her had we not taken such fast
action. The clinic was impressed that I knew the signs and the actions
that I had taken to save her and her first born son. But to me it was a
mix of education, passion with a purpose and devotion to my children. As a
parent when you know your children you know when they need help whether they are
born of you or because of you. Hours in the hospital waiting room were worth
every moment as you can see above. Henry the first born was stunningly healthy
per the vet. They were able to save 4 of the 5 pups with a c-section. The pup
that was in the birth canal took in fluid and they fought to save her but Jesus
took her back home. Leanne is proud to introduce you to her family of 5.
Henry, Yonnie, Grace, Mandy and Heather. Over the years I have ask you my
families and friends to see if you know where these names come from. Here is the
hint They are character's in a series of novels. The author's
inital's are B.L. We have black and white and Tri's. Not sure if there are
roans as it is too early for the color to develop but I think maybe Henry is.
Keep Leanne in your thoughts and prayers as any surgery is dangerous. But
she has come out of it to continue to be the fab mom she has in her last two
litters. With these children she retires from creating life and will just
continue to enjoy life.
I am thrilled as I am getting to know all of the new families
waiting on their Hyer Luv's and to you I welcome back Anne Marie who 12 years
ago took in Joey to her heart and he opened such a place that will welcome
another son into her life out west. I am honored to create a brother for Joey.
Pj and Flirt's children are now on watered down solids.
Savannah's children are on dryer solids. Fred just told me he changed the
spelling of Tiffany's Lindsey to Lynn-Z (men sheesh) She went to her first dog
show weekend and several other breeders were thrilled with her temperament,
integrity and structure. Hannah and baby Maelle are doing well. However
Maelle gave us a scare. Tiffany's breeder took the girls to the vet for
second shots and Maelle had a reaction. Because she is small we will do
additional examinations to insure the reaction had has not caused any health
complications. The vet I spoke with doubts it but you know my commitment.
Before she is rehomed I must be secure in her ability to live a long healthy
life with her family. So you families that have ask after her I will let you
know when she is clear and we can talk about who she is best suited for.
Thank you all for entrusting me to create just the right child
for you. Your happiness and theirs are the heart of my reason for being
selected as your breeder. I will not let one of you down.
Hyest Luv Sam

Pj's children are just adorable.
Thank you to the current, recent and past parents for the many
wonderful emails these past two weeks about how adjusted, well behaved, adorable
and matched family members your Hyer Luv is, has become. You each bless me
and I am working my way through the posts and will answer each of you soon.
Dad's home went up for sale this week. Strange to see it on
line...just a few months from being in our family for 50 years. How can
1960 be 50 years ago...gulp. The house was finally moved into in
1961.Miranda Lambert is singing a song this minute on country music awards about
going home to her childhood home after someone else has lived in it. How
her broken feeling inside will start to heal. Gulp how does God place
these thing in our path when we need it.
I have to go for now. Luv Sam
4-15-10
Yes, I did file the extension again this year. GULP but
this time I really have a ton of good reason. Sorry that the last two photo
entries didn't load well I think I have it fixed now thank you for all of the
emails to let me know.
It was an honor to present the Keegan's with their doghter.
What great questions that Sandee had for me. I know they will be the very best
home for that fur child.

I feel like the tv show HOARDERS is going to award me a guest
spot there is so much to sort and share with others of my parents life. I am not
sure how long it will take to care for the house full of things on top of the
house full of things I already had. Pray for me.
I am thrilled with the families that I am talking to. I
just know these children are going to have a real blessing with all of the
families that wish to add a Hyer Luv to their home. I am hoping to add some more
photo's this weekend. It is time to groom the pups again. Seems like
between training grooming, dad's stuff, the kennel and taking a nap every now
and then. I am on a treadmill.
I was very blessed that my children (Kat Tony and Kris)
were with me to close down "grandpa's" home. I do not think I could
have stood it alone. Even though the night I spent HOME alone was
peaceful. I really felt that I was blessed in how I am progressing with my
parents wishes. With the shear feeling of "this is right" I signed the
papers to bless another family with this amazingly well keep home with newer
roof, appliances, central air, heat, water heater, and water softener. Uh oh now
I sound like the realtor.
Oh I just was told I had another 15 minutes of fame on a
northern Michigan radio station. One of the on air personalities is a
future Hyer Luv family and she shared that with her listeners and they told her
what a real breeder is and she was thrilled that she could answer the bulk of
the things her listeners thought a breeder should be. I am still waiting
for the questions they ask that she could not answer so that I can answer
them. Hum maybe I can be a guest on the show and answer her listeners pet
questions...hum...
Take care my dearest family. Luv Sam
Addition
to entry for 4-11-10

4-11-10
It was a peaceful start on a Sunday at Hyer Luv. The sunrise
stunning over the kennel as we let the guests out for their morning stretch.
Fred and I realizing we, even with "colds" or allergies not sure
which, made it through another Spring Break. And can get back to what we are
even more passionate about. Sending our precious children home to their
new families.

The Johnson's joined us this afternoon to learn about their
doghter Ivy Jane. She was selected and nurtured just for
Mickey's heart and I was pleased that even when tested the family selected the
pup that I had chosen for them. I am thankful for the hand on my shoulder
from above that sends my children thru us and sends those hearts and homes to
take the lives He allows us to create. Also I am thankful that during
their parting prayer and verse of You are my Sunshine...I still feel Him with me
and my mothers arm around my shoulders as I send each baby out into the world to
be loved. And during the conversation it was learned that Libby and Lanny and
Connor know Ivy Jane's parents thru the medical profession.

So for Rick and Mickey...here is the Sperry's the day they
took their son home.
And now it is time to concentrate on my next new family. Tom
and Sandee what do you think of this face?

I felt badly asking her to look into the sun for this
photo. Right afterward she climbed up the steps of the deck...her first
time.

I love this shot it is like hum can I really climb these
steps.
Tomorrow night and Tuesday I will be in Albion finishing
closing up and readying for sale my parents home (since 1961). It is with
an incredible mix of feeling that I go. Part of me is looking forward to
being alone at the house for maybe what will be my last night...ripping off the Band-Aids
and really feeling the loss of them for sure and for certain. And a part
of me fears the darkness of that night. (those that know what my heart is
sharing who have been through it themselves or have an old soul personality will
know my meaning) Tuesday my children will join me to load the few
possessions that our three households will share of my parents. I am glad they
will be there with me and assist me and take a part of their grandparents
history with them.
Savannah's three are fat and sassy. Two black boys and a
black and tan girl. What I thought was tan on one of the boys appears not
to be. I am sort of glad about that. This breeding was to recreate
the blood line of our first Champion Jon. My husband's heart dog and truly
our foundation here at Hyer Luv. And Jon was a solid (not one white hair on him)
black boy.
PJ loves her three so dearly it is neat for her to push them
one at a time forward for me to look at. She reminds me of the personality
of Lady in Lady and the Tramp...because it is I think in that movie she pushes
her pups so Darling can see them. Maybe it is only in my dulled memory of mine.
Flirt has some substantial pups. They are sound and strong.
Looks like one girl is a roan 2 are black and white and a black and white son.
She is very impressive as a mother very calm for a parti and I adore that about
her.
Well, still so much to do. Thank you to all who have
written and inquired about the fur children they are doing amazing and growing
in leaps and bounds. I look forward to the honor of meeting the wonderful
people/homes that the Lord sends for these children. Thanks to each of you.
Luv Your, Sam

Dear Ones,
Happy Easter and all praise to Him the risen Lord.
Pj has had her children. A black girl a black and tan girl and
a black and tan boy.

And here are the other three Tiffany doghters groomed up!

Luv, Sam
3-30-10
Yes, it is the busy time again for us at the kennel, in our
lives, and with all our children.
Today another breeder stepped in to help us. I
appreciate Sharon. I want to thank Mickey and Sandee for checking in on
us.
I am really tired so I am going to make this really brief
tonight. I am going to give a few photos and let you know who they are and
when you see what has happened in our happy home in the last week you will
understand.

The first two children were groomed tonight the other three
need it again as you can tell. The kids get groomed in some form or fashion
weekly.

These are Savannah's children born on the 22nd. a son and
a daughter. Black and black and tan

Flirt is so happy look what I just did today.

Three girls

and a boy
Gee I sure hope I have them labeled right. Fred let me sleep
last night and he whelped the litter since I took care of Savannah's litter.
And now...

Fred has called her OCTOCOCKER. He says they are either
very big or very many...LOL She is in our new room. The one we built
intending to bring dad home. Mickey and Rick will know what I am doing this
moment...so will all the hearts that know me...and on this note I wish you a
wonderful weekend and a BLESSING of Easter and the risen LORD. Hug those
you love...tight. Your, Sam

Even though they have had two grooms they could use it again.
Ha Ha but are they not special. I love black and tan children. They have
so much personality not just in looks but in nature. They are such playful
children. Yesterday was the first day they were allowed outside.
Well at least on the porch.

My grandsons think they are amazing!

And this is their new sister Gracie.

This is something neat I looked at going through my parents
things. This is my mom, dad, self and brother when we were each 18 years
old.

This was one of my proudest moments...I loved how I looked
then.
Today my friend Deb gave me a birthday gift...Two Barbie
dolls. One is so funny because Barbie is potty training puppies and the other is
bathing dogs. Barbie again, has my careers.
Savannah is in the Nursery. We hope that she will have
healthy children (though she looks small) this weekend.
I have to get to paying bills. Gulp you pay them and then they
come again...go figure. Luv Sam

Dear family and friends, Thank you for the birthday greetings,
cards and gifts. How blessed as me. I am back from Atlanta. Had a
great time learning and sharing with other groomers and kennel owners. I also
had a great time with my dear sister friend Linda and her husband Hoyt. I
also got to see my "grandchildren Logan and Kendall" while I was
there. I am their Oma. And while I was gone my fourth grandchild was born
Miss Grace Christine. We are thrilled mother and daughter are home and
fine. I can not wait to get over there this week and see her. With
Linda we took classes at the Atlanta Quilt and Sewing Expo. I came home to
freshly groomed litter of little cocker girls. Up on their feet and starting to
eat gruel meals. The little teeth are doing Tiffany in so she is happier that
they are supplemented now also. I am hoping to get new photos up on the
site this week. I am sure that you understand I am playing catch up from
being gone since the 3rd. But I want to thank the parents of the new litter for
keeping up with me and checking on their progress. And I thank the new
families that have been asking after the coming litters. I am thankful
that so many wish to add a Hyer Luv to their hearts. In today's mail a box
came with the most adorable blanket and toy for their new puppy. I am so
jealous of that puppy girl. She has a HEART blanket with her name embroidered on
it. Sigh...do I not get the best of the best parents.
Well, I was just writing to let you know I am home and will
pupdate really soon. I have evaluations of behaviors and personality
testing to do so I can let you know how they rate on the testing (noted below at
bottom of Nursery News) And photos. Luv Your Sam

EASTON
WEST

I was thrilled with a short weekend visit from my beautiful
daughter and her son .

Hard to believe the girls are growing so fast. Soon it
will be time for their first hair cut. Instead of 2 weeks old I think they
will be more like three weeks as I will be in Atlanta at the pet fair and
visiting client turned friend Linda for my birthday. I will be gone 3-14 longest
I have been away from home in I do not know how long. But with the weight
of the estate issues and decisions, how things have just been piling up on my
heart and soul my dear friends in the industry and clients say come get away
refresh renew then be you. I think that is a great idea!
I have had the blessing of talking to several potential homes.
We believe there will be three litters born next month...and varied colors. YUM.
Well it is after midnight and I have less than 3 days to be
ready to leave I must get a bit of sleep to face all the challenges.
So tell me your favorite face and why?
Luv and prayers I remain your Sam

Lindsey Hyer Luv's It's All Down Hill Now
Ok you see the Gold Metal Honored women of this Olympics.
Lindsey has a somewhat show name so you each can get an idea how to name a show
dog. Next to the names are the event the girls were in. Well, I sort
of Hannah I made Mo Gal instead of moguls. So let the names start a coming
in.
Hey, I have a question....when you want to record
something (remember it started with reel to reel tapes and then 8 tracks and
then cassettes) what do you do or do you?...now I have seen something called a
micro player but you can not share it unless you share the entire player.
As many of you know or have done for me. I usually have families make
tapes to play for their fur children to assist the pup in acclimation into their
new homes. And now it is rare to find anyone that still uses cassettes.
THOUGHTS?
Prayers to those in Austin who had to go thru the man that
flew his plane into a building out there. It is so scary our world right
now. As we all kneel let us pray for kindness to one another,
understanding of each others stress and path in life. And for our
government that they stop looking more toward their job saving (reelection) and
work diligently on solving the issues that our country is in. Pray for the
family of the Luge competitor that lost his life. Losing anyone is an emotional
challenge. But your own child. On NPR I listened to the interview with his
father, a Luge competitor himself and you could hear the emotional loss even
though his words were translated.
I want to let Mickey know that I think of her often throughout
the day. I know the loss of Annie is deep and seems immeasurable right
now. But when a new heart comes your way this spring Annie herself will
watch with joy as your heart is refilled.
I also wish Kim and Sandee know that I have their posts and
will get back with each of you soon. I am in way over my head right now
with regular life, the kennel business, dad's estate, taxes, and gee just life
trying to get over this cold. I am not implying in the least that you are
not a priority in my life like each of my family are!!! But I am just...raw is
the only word that keeps repeating it self in my mind. Every time I turn around
it is something else...and it seems like there are time limits on so much of it.
Well, your kindness in bearing with me is appreciated. I am going, as I
always do, to the lecture circuit in Atlanta March 3-14 ( I am blessed with a
sister girlfriend there that I spend my vacation with) For my birthday (11th) we
always get together. Visiting her and sewing classes during the visit are
my gift to myself each birthday.
OH for those in the west Michigan ...with whom do you have
your TV service with? High speed internet? We have dial up and I am at my
last straw with it...NOT THE SERVICE PROVIDER them I love!!! But now websites
and emails demand more power than dial up allows. I was told there were deals
for bundles and wonder who has what and who is happy with it.
Thanks for each of you. Luv Sam

So far the names are Hannah, Martina, Tatjana, ...One
more gold metal winner. I am thankful for the potential of three amazing
sound parents for this litter so far. On the journey with me to create a
child to fit into their specific families. Feeling a bit ucky again today.
Brother was up from AZ so we met at Dad's house and worked on it. I think
I did too much after being down with a bad cold/flu pout. Well tomorrow is
a light day with only three large dog grooms. SO I can rest as I work on
dad and our taxes and any other paper work laying about (like I wanna
be...laying about tee hee.) Luv Sam

Funny no
one mentioned my error in not putting 2010 LOL Well, fixed anyway.
The
first day of the Winter Olympics Tiffany has decided to have her children.
Yesterday we had a VERY healthy litter of 5 children. 5 black and tan girls.
They are so precious. Watson is beside himself with joy for his new
family. But certainly we were surprised. We thought she would produce from her
last day of being bred but she did from the first day. So for fun of the
naming. We are going to name the girls after women in the Olympics.
We are even going to give them fun (FOR NOW not permanent names as you know the
final parents name their child) going to give them Fun show names. Like
Hyer Luv's All Down Hill for the ski champ...you get the idea. So do not be
surprised if they do not have names right away. Yes, Janet true to my
beliefs of naming them as born still exisits to tag them to Earth but I am
keeping those name private between God and I and will be looking for stand out
sports women to name them after as call names. Pretty sure one is Lindsey...
Today
was a hard Daddy day I am not sure why. But most what I saw, did, thought, heard
reminded me of the one who watched over me. I am told I will have those
days. They bring a sorrowful joy. I am thankful for all of the kennel
business. It is allowing my self to not only "hide myself in
Thee" but in work which is also good for the soul.
I wish
to thank those that have sent me cards. I have gathered them about me many
times to feel your love and know that I am gifted with each of you because my
parents gifted me with life.
I
especially want to give a shout out to Karen in Florida and Jeanie in
California. Your words are always special and mean the world to me as both
of you do.
I also
wish to thank Gabby's new mother in KY for the updates on her and for being my
family/friend low these many years since your adoption of Sydney. Cassie you are
as precious as I knew you would be. I can not wait to spend some real time
with you.
I also
wish to thank those remembered the Hyer Luv Holiday tomorrow with cards and
emails. Helen I love the card you made and "Charley" in Ohio. Thanks
guys.
I am
going to get back to work having had an evil bug this past week and spending
most of it in bed if not grooming. I have a ton of things to catch
up. Stay Happy Stay Healthy dear family. Luv Your Sam

HAPPY
BIRTHDAY TO MY MUCH LOVED FRED!
2-7-10
Much has happened in the last month. Tomorrow is Fred's
birthday. I hope to surprise him with a nice night out. We rarely go
out for more than a burger. I am thinking a dinner and a movie might be
special.
I wish to thank the families that have ask after our spring
children. I am going to chat a little bit about them so that I am fair to those
families and those that may wish to acquire a Hyer Luv child. (But I am having a
difficult time being on line with you each and all still. It is hard for me to
hid my feelings and since I have been a journal writer since I was a dozen years
old I am used to going on and on in word about what I think or feel so I have
been staying off this page for fear of blogging you senseless!)
We have for the last 8 years planned 5 litters for 2010-2011
breeding season. Pedigrees that are being lost due to greed breeding and those
not taking the time to do the genetic testing.
The first litter is due about Feb 18th. Tiffany a
stunning buff doghter is the mother.
She has a wonderful disposition and warm heart. She is comical yet
endearing. Hard to explain. Not to say she is lack luster at
all. She can spend the day at play...do not get me wrong. But when
she has her children. She is all about her children. We have been blessed
over the years in selection of those we breed. Most of the time it is not
just an act of God that we have stunning children in health disposition and
physical beauty, Fred and our team of veternarian's work tirelessly on DNA
testing and pedigree's and my part...I add the LUV. I spend the nights in
the nursery with the mom's and even after the birth sitting with them assisting
where I can and reading, singing and handling each child so they know human love
along with that of their mothers. Never have I had a mother reject my support
that is how I know we are on to the appropriate breeding programs.
The second litter is due about March 19th. Savannah is the
precious mother.
Another Champion female with many wonderful wins due to her temperament and consistency.
I LUV black cockers. Black and Black and Tan were our first cockers.
Blacks have the soft expression and deep eyes that cockers are known for. Blacks
also of the three varieties mature the fastest (meaning that they grow in to the
cocker people desire in their hearts the soonest. Usually this is 1-1.5 years of
age) Savannah is a petite lap loving cocker. I look forward to seeing her
children! I know each paw will be kissed by God's love.
The third litter is being concived in PA with the help of
Jessica. She is one of Fred's dearest handler friends. We co-own Flirt
with her. We paid to have all of her testing done and her Canadian
Championship. Flirt is an oddity for me. Why...I usually am not
attracted to Parti cockers. Not because they are not stunning as they most
certainly are. But as any true honest breeder will tell you...parti's are the
A.D.D. children of cocker spaniels. This varies in degree of course from
those that breed well and those that just breed but no matter the breeder parti
cockers take the longest to out grow puppy. Any where from 2-5 years. They
are the "who is at the door, who is at the window, what is in the box, did
you call me...did you call me...? See what I mean. BUT on the other
hand. If ever there is a cocker that will make you smile it is a parti.
Their joy comes from the feeling they give you and they live to give that
feeling of ...the wind blowing on your face nonjudgmental happiness! I hope you
know what I mean.
PJ is the forth mother another buff but more cinnamon in
color. She is also an American and Canadian Champion. Her children will
arrive we pray safely around March 31st (she would not surprise me if she had
April Fools babies as she enjoys a good joke every now and then. She
is playful yet has an aire of dignity and responsibility about her.
She reminds me of the aurora of Lady in Lady and the Tramp. The petite, shy yet
engaging way about her But do not let me misled you she will get down and dirty
in a game of chase with anyone guesting at the kennel. And she will win at all
she attempts.

Wait, say you that is only four. Ah yes, and too close
together if you ask my old heart...but we have to play this hand dealt by God
all things in his time. Blue the 5th litter I hope will be much further out and
LeAnne
(in the nursery prior to her last litter) our repeat from last year (she was
bred but sadly did not hit at the right time to have pups could still be on the
back burner also) So you see my husband and Holy Father are going to keep my
heart to busy to mourn for very long.
I do wish to share something more with you. In touching
each of dad's things I found some things he treasured. A handmade Father's
Day card when I could first spell all the words right and sign my given name
(correctly) Sandra at about 5 years old. and this letter I am going to share
with you that I wrote to him two years and 10 days before my mother passed away.
July 16, 1997
Dear Dad,
Thank you for teaching me:
How to open a paperback books so the binding does not break.
That roots don't grown through rocks.
That forgiving is easy if your perspective is intact.
(crashing your only new car)
That Love means keeping promises and demands commitment.
That some of our greatest joy comes from serving others.
Don't sweat the small stuff and it is all small stuff.
For keeping me safe from others when I couldn't keep myself
safe.
For showing Doug and I and our children and all who know you
that you HONOR my Mother in your care and devotion to her.
For not teaching me to drive before Driver's Ed class so I
respected you and the privilege of driving.
For the "Green Acres" paper dolls because I was
quiet at a meeting you needed to attend.
For letting me come home when I've needed to be safe and for
letting me leave when I've needed to be brave.
For supporting me even with my wrong decisions without too
many I told you so's.
For hugging me on TV when you were honored with Channel 3's
"My Favorite Teacher Award" so I'll have that memory and film forever.
(those of you that have older parents especially men know
that outward signs of affection are very rare.)
For showing me that the best way to overcome injustice is to
rise above it and be the better person.
For playing with my pets even though you've never liked pets.
For promising to eat what ever I would cook.
For liking my knitting and telling me so (I
also found gently wrapped high on a shelf with his prized possessions the
sweater I made for him)
For taking us the extra miles to 4-H so I could learn how to
knit.
For that I was able to teach 30 girl scouts and my own
daughter to knit.
For teaching me money management, not that I am ahead but I
have never been behind.
For teaching me what to keep in the trunk of my car for
emergencies.
For making the play house and the stilts.
For trapping and releasing the animals in the garden and not
killing them.
For teaching me the value of caring for ones possessions.
For making me a smart shopper.
For being there for me ALWAYS.
And for the millions of other things I use daily and think of
you fondly for but forget to say thank you...I do so now. Love, Sandy
He simply wrote SAVE on the outside of the envelope and tucked
it in the top drawer with the socks and handkerchiefs' that I embroidered
lopsided K's on for him when I was 12 or 13 years old for his birthday.
Maybe later I can share with you the last letter in that trio. But for
now...maybe you want to get out your own pen and paper and write your own letter
to that person you admire and respect who gave all they had,... all they could,
for you!
Luv YOUR, Sam

My heart is broken...on the 11th my father went to be with
Jesus and my mother. I was blessed to be with him... my brother and my
children each of us having time with him. But of course even though you have a
few hours there are still things that go unsaid. I am his executor I never
thought it would be so much...so many people and places to contact so many bills
and things to cancel. His will to follow gifting things he chose. Cleaning and
fixing the house to sell. All of that on top of a broken heart and a business to
keep active. I know I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me but it
still hurts. I lost mom when I turned 40 and dad at 50. Part of me wonders how
long now have I. I need to get things in order so my family doesn't have the
heart ache that I am facing now. My father donated over 3 gals of blood during
his life. Served in the Korean war in the Navy. He taught math to 7-8 grades for
over 35 years. He worked on committees to better the community and teachers
rights. He cared for two ailing wives. He ran classes at the local senior center
and was active in hospice groups. He donated to many local and national
charities and started a charity in the name of my mother and my stepmother. He
selflessly gave...a neighbor needing a water heater another needing to help send
her daughter to collage. Finding little jobs for his neighbors that were out of
work so they didn't have to take charity and then over paying them for the
tasks. Buying meals for seniors. He has letters from former students that went
on to OVER achieve and community members that thanked him for years of
service. He even taught adult education and tutored children and adults so
they could graduate well. In his way, as he could, he did the best he could with
what he had and knew. Thank you Daddy I miss you.

We are also hoping that the two litters we planned for spring
homes will take new life often helps lessen the loss of same. OH ok I say that
but now I truly feel alone. There is something about becoming the oldest
in a family line that makes you feel helpless and useless and afraid of not
doing, saying or being right for self and others.
Please keep my family in your prayers and myself that I make
the right choices needed in the coming days and months.
Luv Sam

Wow time
to start a new year and a new page. Some of the things that you are used to
seeing are still here. Like the fun things at the bottom of the page that
are always there...things to make, health tips, things to do with your dog, how
we start the socialization program for our dogs that assist in making them the
wonderful fur children you each write me about.
Many of
you know of the health challenges facing both myself and my father. This
week he this non-smoker will have a lung biopsy. He will be on O2 for the rest
of his life. And I am to carry nitro spray with me. Argh time to slow it down
and take better care of me as I see I will have to repay the favor to my father
of his years of caring for me. Thank you to those who have offered prayer and
assistance. I love you each and all.
Yes,
Gabby did get her forever home to those asking. After about 9 applications
last month I was blessed to be choosen and to chose Cassie and Alan. They
blessed me with a wonderful home for Sydney many many years ago. I am
thrilled that Gabby will be adored and luved the same way.
Fred is
at the ASC Spaniel Show in PA he left with a show friend Sharon this morning and
gone until Monday. So I get to chose what to clean and do while he is
gone. Ok ladies you know what I mean it is so much easier to start a
cleaning project when you can work on it when you want and how you want.
I was
thankful for all of the cards/photos and emails/photos of "our"
children...YOUR children. It is so great to see how they have grown and how you
have grown with them. With some of you it was hard to see where the dog
child stopped and you started. Sigh my heart belongs to each of you...thank YOU!
We have
spent sometime evaluating our breeding program and have written some plans out
for the next 6 years. Some say what...aren't you like "breeders"
that just breed when your dogs come in season to what ever dog you have.
NO...many reasons. Here are a few. The point of being a breeder is to improve
the health temperament and quality of the breed. So doing the health and genetic
testing, studying the dogs available to breed to and the pups they have produced
and knowing why and what you are breeding for is imperative. So just like
anything worthwhile you plan. Then of course you wait...because the course
of nature and God's plan come first above all. So in that vein we hope to have a
wonderful litter this spring of a line we have planned for almost 6 years. I am
not going to say too much because I do not want to jinx my happiness.
What was
your best Christmas gift this year? Mine (thanks for asking) for the first
time in 18years I was blessed with a gift from Fred...a journey necklace and...a
new 450 sq ft addition to our home incase my father chooses to live with us if
not...many years ago there was a book called A room of her own...Oprah's space
was in it as was many other famous and regular folks having seen that book on my
shelf...Fred has given me a space of my own. I can put my crafts in a
space that will allow me to actually spend sometime creating. See when it
takes as much time to get things out to work on as the few moments that you have
to create you tend not to create so what a blessing my gifting has been.
For my birthday he redid the bathroom on the lower level so that it is accessible
to my father should he move in with us.
Another
gift was from my heavenly Father this year. Getting back in touch with
friends and family that I had lost touch with and meeting new friends and new
church family in my 50 things for others during my 50th birthday year. I am now
the proud family member of two church communities due to their need and my
desire to share. No one can have to much love in their life.
We are
almost to the 40 Champion mark. I think he may make it before he is 50 his
goal to retire from showing and be a dog show judge. We can not count the
dogs that we did not own or put all the points on but he has substantially
assisted others with their show programs. (uh oh too I appear too proud?)
For
those of you in my area. I am trying to learn what phone book is most
utilized...For those not in my area when you are looking for a groomer or kennel
do you go on line or do you look in the phone book? Answer here: sam@hyerluv.com
Benny
weemer is doing great. He is so much joy to my heart. Each day he
seems to know what to give me to allow my heart to keep healing after the loss
of Ashley in 8/08. Fred will be seeing his breeder this weekend and I told him
to tell him how much in detail this fur son means to me.
We also
added a new room to the kennel last/this year. I finished (ok I will never
finish my studies in animal behavior and care) my "masters" in animal
behavior I promised myself I would take to heart something I thought would
benefit our guests and added a new small dog room. Some times depending on breed
and breeder or gulp pet store (don't go there Sam) small dogs (any dog really)
can be breed with certain emotional scars that cause them to be upset over even
just the smell of a large dog or a dog that could cause them pause...having a
room with dogs less than 25 pounds is a benefit to their emotional well being
and enjoyment of being one of our guests.
I am
working on some more articles for the Rockford Squire...you can if you would
like to see some of my tips and tricks go to www.rockfordsquire.com
and in search put Sam Hyer and it will bring up all of my articles for them.
Well, it
is time for me to run let the dogs out (woof) Thanks for spending time with me
today. Oh one more thought...if you have made a new years resolution let me know
what it is and the steps your taking to make it happen. sam@hyerluv.com

Yes,
in seven whole minutes. And you can have those jazzy dog t-shirt bed for your
little poochie to sunk onto.
However if you and your dog are in the mood for artistic expression, go for
the ultimate. More on that later on. But first let me share with you why
making dog t-shirt bed is not only a fun craft but a necessity for dog owners
who had just acquired their first dog.
Dog beds made from your old t-shirts are very appealing to your small dogs
especially for young dogs or puppies. It gives them a sense of you while
you’re away, which in turns lessen the seperation anixety you dog might
encounter. Furthermore, making your dog t-shirt bed can be emotionally
rewarding, and it saves you money at the same time . The t-shirt beds can be
machine-washed and dried when it becomes dirty and/or smelly.
Things you need are:
- One of your old t-shirts
- Some cotton batting or fibrefill
- Thread and needle
- Sewing machine (optional)
Steps in making Dog t-shirt Bed:
- Turn the t-shirts inside out and sew the armholes and neck hole of the
shirt closed.
- Then turn the t-shirt with its outside out.
- Fill the top half of the shirt with whatever washable fillings you
choose.
- Sew a seam across the midsection of the t-shirt just below the arms to
trap the fillings in the top half.
- Sew another seam from the centre of the midsection seam to the bottom of
the shirt, creating two sections in the lower half of the t-shirt.
- Stuff both sections, and then sew the bottom shut.
You have created a dog bed with three pillowed sections. Place the bed
anywhere your dog likes to sleep – next to a heating vent, next to your
lounge chair in the living room, in his crate, or treat it like a big cushion
and place it on the sofa while both you and your dog watching TV.
Another great idea would be using toddler t-shirts and make a couple
“mini-plushs” for your dog to cuddle with at night. You are only limited
by your imagination. So have fun.
Your dog will love you for making them.
Okay about the ultimate thing I was talking earlier on? Basically is to add
a personal touch to it. Get fabric paints (non-toxic) of your dog’s
favorite colors, dip your dog’s paw slightly onto the paint then dab it
onto the t-shirt. Do this before you add the fillings.
And if your dog feels like being Van Gogh for a day, by all means, have all
his paws walk over the t-shirt. Add yours too!!! THANK YOU RENEE

Ear Cleaner Recipe
__________________________
Ingredients:
White vinegar
Powdered boric acid
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Betadine antiseptic (or generic equivalent)
Directions for mixing the solution together:
Pour 6 ounces of isopropyl alcohol in to a plastic applicator bottle.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of boric acid powder.
Add 2 ounces of white vinegar.
Shake the solution extremely well, until the boric acid powder is fully
dissolved.
Once the powder is dissolved, add one teaspoon of the Betadine antiseptic,
and
shake it up some more.
Squirt the solution inside your dog's ear until the ear canal is
completely full.
Massage the outside of the ear to help slosh the cleaning solution around
inside.
Hold the dog still for about a minute.
Be sure to shake the solution up really well before each and every time
you use it.
The boric acid has a tendency to settle at the bottom of the bottle.
Store at room temperature.
Use the cleaning solution daily until you start to see some improvement.
Gradually cut back to once per week when you are happy with the condition
of the ear.
When the ear seems completely free of infection, you can go two weeks
between treatments.
Grow Old With Dogs
When I am old...
I will wear soft gray sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my silver hair.....
and I will spend my social security checks on wine and my dogs.
I will sit in my house on my well worn chair
and listen to my dogs' breathing.
I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night
and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow...
When people come to call, I will smile
and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them...
...the ones so beloved of the past
and the ones so beloved of today....
I will still work hard cleaning after them,
mopping and feeding them and
whispering their names in a soft loving way.
I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat,
like a jewel and I will be an embarrassment to all...
especially my family...
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your best friends....
These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you as if you are a God.
With warm eyes full of adoring love and hope
that you will always stay,
I'll hug their big strong necks...
I'll kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper in their very special company....
I look in the Mirror...and see I am getting old....
this is the kind of person I am...and have always been.
Loving dogs is easy,
they are part of me.
Please accept me for who I am.
My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives...
they love my presence in their lives......
When I am old this will be important to me...
you will understand when you are old....
if you have dogs to love too.

WARNING>>>>Be
careful at your vets with your cockers. I have had reports of two
cockers from my breeding and 15 yes, I said 15 other cockers having near
death reactions to the LEPTO shot that is now being used by many vets due
to an out break of the disease. BUT in my opinion....it is not worth
the risk. One of the dogs is over 6 years old and she was affliected
with in hours of the injection. The other a pup under 6 months
almost DIED with in minutes of the shot. Both events cost my
families in heartache and concern but also one over 120.00 more than the
appointment cost and the other almost 300.00 due to the fact they had to
go to the after hours emergency vet.

WHY DOGS DON'T LIVE AS LONG AS PEOPLE
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner, his wife, and their little
boy
were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the
family
there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform the
euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be
good
for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure. They felt he
could
learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family
surrounded him. The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog
for the
last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within
a few
minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to
accept
Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud
about the
sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. The little
boy,
who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth
next
stunned
me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said,
"Everybody is
born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving
everybody
and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well,
animals
already
know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

A very neat email came
today. It was from the author of the Valentine poem I found on the
byb site. Here is her letter. I guess it amazes me who reads my
musings and rantings. I thank you all for giving me a voice.
Even for my nonsense.
I cried when I saw you had put my poem on your website. How
did you come upon it? I wrote it the morning of Valentine's Day
and sent it to CockerFriends, a yahoo group to which I belong. It
has been two years since on 2/06/03 my darling Tsatchka left to go to
heaven where she is wagging her long tail and looking at all with
wonder. She sends me lots of poems and she remains my muse.
Thank you for posting it. I am so grateful to have the love of
animals, especially my sweet cockers. I am from Michigan, too. I
grew up in Detroit and Huntington Woods and went to high school at
Interlochen Arts Acadamy near Traverse City. Now I live in San
Francisco. Where are you located? If I get back to
Michigan, maybe for my 40th high school reunion next year, perhaps
I could come and see you.

It is sent with so much love
And so many salty tears
And sent with wonderful memories
That comfort us through the years
We are glad you came to us
And that you chose to stay
If it was for just for a little while
Or for many happy days
You know that we appreciate
The special gifts you brought
And we've tried to learn the lessons
That through your lives you taught
So on this day reserved for love
We remember you
And all the love which you gave us
A love so strong and true
And though you are far from our sight
And gone from space and time
We send to you our truest love

This is one of the neatest stories I've ever heard.
You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end!
"Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again. We've been
back to this animal shelter at least five times. It has been weeks
now since we started all of this," the mother told the volunteer.
"What is it she keeps asking for?" the volunteer asked.
"Puppy size!" replied the mother.
"Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking
for."
"I know...we have seen most of them," the mom said in
frustration...
Just then Danielle came walking into the office.
"Well, did you find one?" asked her mom. "No, not
this time," Danielle said with sadness in her voice. "Can
we come back on the weekend?"
The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.
"You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately,
there's always a supply," the volunteer said.
Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door. "Don't
worry, I'll find one this weekend," she said.
Over the next few days both mom and dad had long conversations with her.
They both felt she was being too particular. "It's this weekend
or we're not looking any more," Dad finally said in frustration.
"We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size either,"
Mom added.
Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning.
By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that
housed the smaller dogs. Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small
waiting room at the end of the first row of cages.
There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times
when visitors weren't permitted. Danielle walked slowly from cage to
cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look. One by one the
dogs were brought out and she held each one. One by one she said,
"Sorry, you're not the one."
It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup.
The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the
dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer.
"Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one!
I know it!" she screamed with joy. "It's the puppy
size!"
"But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the
last few weeks," Mom said.
"No not size--the sighs. When I held him in my arms, he
sighed," she said.
"Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you
told me love depends on the sighs of your heart. The more you love,
the bigger the sigh!"
The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know
whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she
did a little of both.
"Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come
home from work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would
find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms," she
said. Then holding the puppy up close to her face she said,
"Mom, he loves me. I heard the sighs of his heart!"
Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh.
I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a
sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a
hot day.
They are the sighs of God. Take the time to stop and listen; you
will be surprised at what you hear. "Life is not measured by
the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

BAKING SODA...this is a jewel...save it.
COTTON BALL REMEDY
What do you do if your puppy (or mischievous older dog) gets into your
holiday decorations and eats some of the glass ornaments? This potentially
lethal mishap can darken even the brightest holiday season.
THE PROCEDURE
BEFORE the holiday go to a pharmacy and buy a box of cotton balls. Be sure
that you get COTTON balls...not the cosmetic puffs that are made from
man-made fibers. Also, buy a quart of half-and-half coffee cream and put
it
in the freezer. Should your dog eat glass ornaments.
Defrost the half-and-half and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into
the
cream and feed them to your dog. Dogs under 10 lbs should eat 2 balls
which
you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5
balls
and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton
ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange treats and eat them
readily.
As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all
the
glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of
glass
will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will
protect
the intestines from damage by the glass. Your dogs stools will be really
weird for a few days and you will have to be careful to check for fresh
blood
or a tarry appearance to
the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear, you should rush your
dog
to the vet for a checkup but, in most cases, the dogs will be just fine.
An actual experience: I can personally vouch for the cotton ball
treatment.
While I was at the vet waiting for him to return from lunch a terrified
woman
ran in with a litter of puppies who had demolished a wooden crate along
with
large open staples. The young vet had taken x-rays which did show each of
the
puppies had swallowed several open staples. He was preparing them for
surgery
when my
wonderful vet came in and said no surgery. I watched him wet several
cotton
balls, squeeze out the water and pop them down their throats. Within 24
hours
every staple was accounted for.
This was a lesson I learned in the mid-1960s and have had to use several
times on my brats. I wet the cotton balls and smear on some liverwurst and
they bolt it down and ask for more. The cotton always comes out with the
object safely embedded.

Our clinic did a small test on some dogs that were having ear problems. One
ear was treated with traditional RX and the other was treated with the Blue
recipe. Now the vets are believers and we use and provide large quantities
to patients. All I can say is that if you do not have success, you did not
follow the prescribed schedule far it's use. My mother was an Olympic
swimmer and this was used for those that had swimmers' ear. My daughter has
a Labrador that has squishy ears forever, he thinks he is an Olympic
swimmer, his ears are wonderful, pink and painless now, needless to say the
pool is brown now, there are 4 Labs swimming.
Sue
I followed the instructions from the website when
treating my bitch's ears. Hers were in pretty bad shape too and the Allergist
at Ohio State told me her ears would be chronic her entire life.
I was able to keep them in OK condition as long as I followed his strict
regime. Twice a day treatments. But when Jean told us about the
Blue Power Treatment on the List I decided to try. It took a couple
of months of treatment and when she died about 2 years later... her
ears were pink as a new baby's bottom. The last two years of her life I
only treated her on a weekly basis.
Recently I clipper burned my r/w Charlie in two
places on the side of his neck. I applied the Blue Violet full strength
using the wand to the spots. He stopped scratching and when I groomed him
yesterday the scabs fell off. I remember my mother's dogs would have dark
blue spots on them from time to time. I asked what that blue stuff was for
and she told me it healed sores. Of course I being ignorant laughed at
her. Now I know what my Mom used and I bet anything she was laughing up in
heaven while I 'doctored' up my Charlie.
Wilma P
I
also found Blue Power very effective for “cocker mouth”, I just squirt
it into the infected area of the flue, and it works wonders.
Doesn’t seem to sting at all, whereas alcohol by itself is quite
painful and the dog will protest. I
had one dog with infected flues so bad that they were bleeding and
wasn’t able to clear it up. I
had to take him out of open obedience for a while because he couldn’t
hold the dumbbell. Cleared it
up with magic Blue Power!!.
Never thought of it for clipper burn, but will try it
next time. Thanks Wilma! Cheers,
Marnie

them regular and nutritious meals, put them on a strict outdoor walking or
indoor paper schedule. Confine them at night and at specific times during
the day until they can be trusted to have the run of the house. and give
them plenty of praise. Canine pack relationships are based on dominance
hierarchy or a descending pecking order...this is important to know on every
level...this is ingrained. they are dogs not little furry people even
though we wish...
You need to let the dog know who ranks in your family...Parents then human
children then DOG!
As I have mentioned before it is between the 4-5 week that dogs attain their
sensory and motor abilities. Nikki gives them less intensive care and
they become independent like little toddlers. Social bonds with the siblings
develop. The pups start to explore their world they test their abilities and
struggle with each other to see who is pack alpha at this time. At about 5
weeks they want to keep the nest clean they want to wonder away and potty
somewhere off the blanket...(nest) If you take advantage of the natural instinct
of the dog house training will speed along. Pups start out wanting to
please you. It is nature to them to seek approval and they long to be
challenged with educational opportunities...this is where parents faultier.
Your need to play with cute stupid puppy doesn't nurture pup to
strive. Then when you feel pup should know better he has no desire to
learn anymore as he was only requested to be cute...see where I am going
here folks...
The best time to work with house training is 6-8 weeks depending on
emotional stability of the pup. (IMHO) I feel the 7th week is the time to
start separating parent and child. this is time for them to develop into
their own personality.
One of the reasons I have always been insistent on not placing pups until
after 8 weeks (10-12) is because puppies for thru a fear imprinting stage
between 8-10 weeks this is an extremely important life stage...NO PUNISHMENT
SHOULD BE EXTREME OR YOU WILL RUIN THIS PUPPY!!! hear me here. PLEASE...this
is so important especially in sensitive parti's Do not let anyone scare or
intimidate your pup!!! An experience that causes trembling at this stage
could ruin a puppy for life.
Dr. Michael Fox a noted behaviorist stated
" A young puppy is a highly responsible creature with an incredible
capacity to explore its environment and learn new things every day. There is
a critical period from 8-12 weeks of age when a puppy's inclination to
explore and acquire knowledge is set. If experiences and simple training or
handling is denied or limited during this early period the puppy will have a
lower IQ as an adult dog"
7day training period to house or paper train includes.
1. establish regular eating habits
EAT SAME FOOD AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME PLACE (it is reassuring to
them) GIVE DOG 15-20 MINUTES TO EAT THEN REMOVE UNEATEN PORTION. THIS
WILL TEACH DOG NOT TO LINGER OVER FOOD
2. confine your dog to a "den" (crate-small room) where he
won't want to relieve himself.
3. Following a strict outdoor walking schedule or indoor paper
schedule
WITH A PUPPY THERE IS A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BETWEEN INTAKE AND
EXPEL...GO OUT SIDE TO SPOT YOU WANT TO USE...SAME SPOT EACH TIME...NO PLAY
IGNORE LET PUP POTTY. Take dog out on a leash...this is two
fold...less play and you leash train at the same time...do not yank on the
leash....you will ruin dogs desire to walk nicely with you. When you are at
the potty place the only time you talk to the dog is when he is done and NO
PLAYING with him in the potty place. On the way to the potty place you say
lets go_____what ever word you wish to use.
4. Give plenty of praise
THAT IS THE BEST PILE OF POOP IN THE WHOLE WORLD GOOD DOG.
5. Using the right kind of corrective training
6. Getting rid of odors promptly
During the 7 day period you should offer water at specific times on
the schedule you create for your dog. Let him drink as much as he wants in
10 minutes then pick up bowl. Once he is house trained he can have water
left out all the time.
Dogs MUST GO OUTSIDE EVERY TIME THEY WAKE UP so plan on waking earlier
than he.
After every meal or snack or drink of water even one lap....
after extreme excitement or long play periods and the last thing at
night before you go to bed.
If you are gone during the day be sure pup has plenty to play with so
that he doesn't potty out of boredom...
When pup does his "business" out side he gets free
time. If he only does part he goes to "den" then 5 mins
later try the potty again. if he does it all free time. This is
not punishment this is learning protocol.
At about 14 weeks old pups should have the physical development to
hold it thru the night.
NEVER CALL YOUR DOG TO CORRECT HIM...Spunky Come. then
bam he
is punished and know that COME is a bad word... Distraction while dog is in
the act is the best way to catch him. A plastic jar with coins or
nails that you shake or drop when you catch the pup in ACTION will cause
them to pause enough so you grab it up CASUALLY and go to potty spot. When
you find an accident take your dog over to it and say in a angry sad voice
naughty dog no...allow him to smell take him to potty place for at least
5-10 minutes then den him while you clean it up (NATURES MIRACLE is a good
product. Nilotex is good. white vinegar and water will also do in a pinch.
Ok well that is the way I remember it and feel about it. Luv Sam

I am taking this opportunity to share with you some questions posed to me
today....
Does a new puppy need to be let out after a
few hours
or can they tolerate being confined for that period of time?
....If you are home I say anytime you potty take out the dog. I say
every 2 hours. Remember what goes in has to come out so....only feed and
water when you have 30 mins after to ensure they go.... A cheap paper back
book is called HOW TO HOUSE BREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS....it give schedules
for working persons to help with this.....
I also wondered if it is better for a young puppy to
be in an enclosed
room with papers down on the floor so that he can go if needed instead of
being expected to control his bladder in a grate?
...Ah the age old question....PROBLEM if you train a pup to pee on paper
NO PAPER will be sacred. They will always potty on paper in or out
of the house. One should IMHO train the way that they eventually
wish the dog to go. If you want potty on paper for 15 years go for it.
If you want it in a spot by the compost pile train in that area.....They
need to learn control and to hold...BUT the bladder of a 6-8 week is
smaller than 10-12 and they are really in good shape to hold it at about 6
months.
My other question concerns treats. Can a young
puppy be given treats as a
reward for positive behavior? YES!!!!
I am concerned that their digestive systems
aren't developed enough to handle them. Are there treats that are
made
specifically for puppies?
Yes, but I prefer using CHIX or TURKEY hot dogs....
If you chop them up in to circles then cut them in to 1/4's those mini
pieces in a zippy lock bag will last ages....and they are good for the dog
and they are SPECIAL what I mean by that is you will ONLY GIVE THIS TREAT
FOR CERTAIN BEHAVIORS....this is not a routine treat only during training
periods or behaviors your trying to achieve.
A vet told me many years ago that you need to
be
careful what you feed to cockers.
TRUE...
He told me that I should never feed her
human food and that dry dog food was best.
TRUE....never feed fatty items. They have not the system to break
it down. Do not feed ONIONS....but gee cut up apple is good for
them...broccoli...cauliflower...but no MCDONALD's burgers and fries... ice cream
is ok but not all the
time...Dry is best for the teeth...moisture allows the food to stay on the
teeth and cause issues. I am peddling OXYFRESH to folks now because
I believe in the products for dental and pet care. But any brushing
of the teeth will extend the life and health of your dog....
MANY of you have ask me about a book I recommend. For years it has
been THE PERFECT PUPPY ...A READERS DIGEST PUBLISHING BOOK... WRITTEN BY
GWEN BAILEY... Deb just recently found it available on line and at local
book stores. Especially if your intent on having the best family member and
the younger family (humans) have never had success with a pet.
Week one...the main concern at this time is to keep the children free
from draft, contamination and to keep the mother calm and enjoying her task
as being mom. Day 3-5 is time to do tails and dew claws.
Week two...T-touch is important as from day one. That is getting
the pups used to human touch and manipulation. That is important not
only for the socialization aspect but so that grooming and accepting
children. Week two is also the time to ensure they are uniformly gaining
weight and are developing normally. First worming took place.
Week three...eyes and ears start to open. That is why your tapes
were important. They start from the beginning hearing any noises that
maybe scary to dogs normally. But because we ask you to help with strange or
normal noises in your home the pups see it all as routine and this will
cause less emotional and physical stress. Normally hair cuts were week
two but this troupe didn't grow as fast as a black. So week three was
first hair cuts and they are safely saved for you. Each child did
well. None felt offended and this is the goal. We also did second
worming and ensuring that each pup has doubled the birth weight. The
children are advancing faster than I am used to. They are already to be in
their own nest. (bottom of a plastic dog crate so they can walk in and out
of it or should I say crawl.)
Week four...all of the babies are finding their legs. another worming for
them and mother. Another face groom will happen today (8-13) and when Fred
comes home I hope to stack up your kids so you can see them in a show
stance. I also want to set them up in some cute photo's for those doing
scrap books. Yes we are starting to walk and we are starting little noises
not barks not growls but they are like little rumble noises. They are
learning play from each other and mother. They also are on the wire walking
that is really really good!
I have almost all of the photo's and all of the tapes...I do need to know
where the butterfly toy was purchased. WE LOVE THAT TOY!!!!
I would love to help each family with the details they wish to know
so...write to me and I will take all the questions and answer them
here. And yes, all of you former families and looky loo's feel free to
write also. Luv Sam

Interpreting the Scores
- Mostly 1's
A puppy that consistently scores a 1 in the
temperament section of the test is an extremely dominant, aggressive puppy
who can easily be provoked to bite. His dominant nature will attempt to
resist human leadership, thus requiring only the most experienced of
handlers. This puppy is a poor choice for most individuals and will do
best in a working situation as a guard or police dog.
- Mostly 2's
This pup is dominant and self-assured. He can
be provoked to bite; however he readily accepts human leadership that is
firm, consistent and knowledgeable. This is not a dog for a tentative,
indecisive individual. In the right hands, he has the potential to become
a fine working or show dog and could fit into an adult household, provided
the owners know what they are doing.
- Mostly 3's
This pup is outgoing and friendly and will
adjust well in situations in which he receives regular training and
exercise. He has a flexible temperament that adapts well to different
types of environment, provided he is handled correctly. May be too much
dog for a family with small children or an elderly couple who are
sedentary.
- Mostly 4's
A pup that scores a majority of 4's is an
easily controlled, adaptable puppy whose submissive nature will make him
continually look to his master for leadership. This pup is easy to train,
reliable with kids, and, though he lacks self-confidence, makes a
high-quality family pet. He is usually less outgoing than a pup scoring
in the 3's, but his demeanor is gentle and affectionate.
- Mostly 5's
This is a pup who is extremely submissive and
lacking in self-confidence. He bonds very closely with his owner and
requires regular companionship and encouragement to bring him out of
himself. If handled incorrectly, this pup will grow up very shy and
fearful. For this reason, he will do best in a predictable, structured
lifestyle with owners who are patient and not overly demanding, such as an
elderly couple.
- Mostly 6's
A puppy that scores 6 consistantly is
independent and uninterested in people. He will mature into a dog who is
not demonstrably affectionate and who has a low need for human
companionship. In general, it is rare to see properly socialized pups test
this way; however there are several breeds that have been bred for
specific tasks (such as basenjis, hounds, and some northern breeds) which
can exhibit this level of independence. To perform as intended, these dogs
require a singularity of purpose that is not compromised by strong
attachments to their owner.
The remainder of the puppy test is an evaluation of obedience aptitude and
working ability and provides a general picture of a pup's intelligence,
spirit, and willingness to work with a human being. For most owners, a good
companion dog will score in the 3 to 4 range in this section of the test.
Puppies scoring a combination of 1's and 2's require experienced handlers who
will be able to draw the best aspects of their potential from them.
Important note from Wendy Volhard...regarding the Touch Sensitivity test -
Do not use your fingernail when performing this test. Press between the finger
and thumb lightly then more firmly until you get a response.
