HYER LUV PET PUPS ARE PLACED ON SPAY NEUTER CONTRACTS ONLY!

Cockers in Michigan from quality and qualified breeders are over $600.00. Some breeders charge as much as $2,500. Our Children normally range $700-800. this is factoring in all costs of breeding and vet expenses. Please do not ask for a discount as it would compromise our ability to breed sound, sane, healthy, family friendly cockers. And cause me to doubt your ability to give the care, devotion, and attention to the child we so painstakingly created just for you!

EASTON WEST

I was thrilled with a short weekend visit from my beautiful daughter and her son .

Hard to believe the girls are growing so fast.  Soon it will be time for their first hair cut.  Instead of 2 weeks old I think they will be more like three weeks as I will be in Atlanta at the pet fair and visiting client turned friend Linda for my birthday. I will be gone 3-14 longest I have been away from home in I do not know how long.  But with the weight of the estate issues and decisions, how things have just been piling up on my heart and soul my dear friends in the industry and clients say come get away refresh renew then be you.  I think that is a great idea!

I have had the blessing of talking to several potential homes. We believe there will be three litters born next month...and varied colors. YUM.

Well it is after midnight and I have less than 3 days to be ready to leave I must get a bit of sleep to face all the challenges.

So tell me your favorite face and why?

Luv and prayers I remain your Sam

Hannah    Hyer Luv's Mo Gal

Martina    Hyer Luv's Speed Skate

Tatjana   Hyer Luv's Luge

Maelle  Hyer Luv's Snow Board

Lindsey   Hyer Luv's It's All Down Hill Now

Ok you see the Gold Metal Honored women of this Olympics.  Lindsey has a somewhat show name so you each can get an idea how to name a show dog.  Next to the names are the event the girls were in. Well, I sort of  Hannah I made Mo Gal instead of moguls. So let the names start a coming in.

Hey,  I have a question....when you want to record something (remember it started with reel to reel tapes and then 8 tracks and then cassettes) what do you do or do you?...now I have seen something called a micro player but you can not share it unless you share the entire player.  As many of you know or have done for me.  I usually have families make tapes to play for their fur children to assist the pup in acclimation into their new homes.  And now it is rare to find anyone that still uses cassettes. THOUGHTS?

Prayers to those in Austin who had to go thru the man that flew his plane into a building out there. It is so scary our world right now.  As we all kneel let us pray for kindness to one another, understanding of each others stress and path in life.  And for our government that they stop looking more toward their job saving (reelection) and work diligently on solving the issues that our country is in. Pray for the family of the Luge competitor that lost his life. Losing anyone is an emotional challenge.  But your own child. On NPR I listened to the interview with his father, a Luge competitor himself and you could hear the emotional loss even though his words were translated.

I want to let Mickey know that I think of her often throughout the day.  I know the loss of Annie is deep and seems immeasurable right now.  But when a new heart comes your way this spring Annie herself will watch with joy as your heart is refilled.

I also wish Kim and Sandee know that I have their posts and will get back with each of you soon.  I am in way over my head right now with regular life, the kennel business, dad's estate, taxes, and gee just life trying to get over this cold.  I am not implying in the least that you are not a priority in my life like each of my family are!!! But I am just...raw is the only word that keeps repeating it self in my mind. Every time I turn around it is something else...and it seems like there are time limits on so much of it. Well, your kindness in bearing with me is appreciated.  I am going, as I always do, to the lecture circuit in Atlanta March 3-14 ( I am blessed with a sister girlfriend there that I spend my vacation with) For my birthday (11th) we always get together.  Visiting her and sewing classes during the visit are my gift to myself each birthday.

OH for those in the west Michigan ...with whom do you have your TV service with? High speed internet?  We have dial up and I am at my last straw with it...NOT THE SERVICE PROVIDER them I love!!! But now websites and emails demand more power than dial up allows. I was told there were deals for bundles and wonder who has what and who is happy with it.

Thanks for each of you. Luv Sam

So far the names are Hannah, Martina, Tatjana, ...One more gold metal winner.  I am thankful for the potential of three amazing sound parents for this litter so far.  On the journey with me to create a child to fit into their specific families. Feeling a bit ucky again today.  Brother was up from AZ so we met at Dad's house and worked on it.  I think I did too much after being down with a bad cold/flu pout.  Well tomorrow is a light day with only three large dog grooms.  SO I can rest as I work on dad and our taxes and any other paper work laying about (like I wanna be...laying about tee hee.) Luv Sam

Funny no one mentioned my error in not putting 2010 LOL Well, fixed anyway.

The first day of the Winter Olympics Tiffany has decided to have her children.  Yesterday we had a VERY healthy litter of 5 children. 5 black and tan girls. They are so precious.  Watson is beside himself with joy for his new family. But certainly we were surprised. We thought she would produce from her last day of being bred but she did from the first day. So for fun of the naming.  We are going to name the girls after women in the Olympics.  We are even going to give them fun (FOR NOW not permanent names as you know the final parents name their child) going to give them Fun show names.  Like Hyer Luv's All Down Hill for the ski champ...you get the idea. So do not be surprised if they do not have names right away.  Yes, Janet true to my beliefs of naming them as born still exisits to tag them to Earth but I am keeping those name private between God and I and will be looking for stand out sports women to name them after as call names. Pretty sure one is Lindsey...

Today was a hard Daddy day I am not sure why. But most what I saw, did, thought, heard reminded me of the one who watched over me. I am told I will have those days.  They bring a sorrowful joy. I am thankful for all of the kennel business.  It is allowing my self to not only "hide myself in Thee" but in work which is also good for the soul.

I wish to thank those that have sent me cards.  I have gathered them about me many times to feel your love and know that I am gifted with each of you because my parents gifted me with life.

I especially want to give a shout out to Karen in Florida and Jeanie in California.  Your words are always special and mean the world to me as both of you do.

I also wish to thank Gabby's new mother in KY for the updates on her and for being my family/friend low these many years since your adoption of Sydney. Cassie you are as precious as I knew you would be.  I can not wait to spend some real time with you.

I also wish to thank those remembered the Hyer Luv Holiday tomorrow with cards and emails. Helen I love the card you made and "Charley" in Ohio. Thanks guys.

I am going to get back to work having had an evil bug this past week and spending most of it in bed if not grooming.  I have a ton of things to catch up.  Stay Happy Stay Healthy dear family.  Luv Your Sam

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MUCH LOVED FRED!

2-7-10

Much has happened in the last month.  Tomorrow is Fred's birthday.  I hope to surprise him with a nice night out.  We rarely go out for more than a burger.  I am thinking a dinner and a movie might be special.

I wish to thank the families that have ask after our spring children. I am going to chat a little bit about them so that I am fair to those families and those that may wish to acquire a Hyer Luv child. (But I am having a difficult time being on line with you each and all still. It is hard for me to hid my feelings and since I have been a journal writer since I was a dozen years old I am used to going on and on in word about what I think or feel so I have been staying off this page for fear of blogging you senseless!)

We have for the last 8 years planned 5 litters for 2010-2011 breeding season. Pedigrees that are being lost due to greed breeding and those not taking the time to do the genetic testing.

The first litter is due about Feb 18th.  Tiffany a stunning buff doghter is the mother. She has a wonderful disposition and warm heart.  She is comical yet endearing.  Hard to explain.  Not to say she is lack luster at all.  She can spend the day at play...do not get me wrong.  But when she has her children.  She is all about her children. We have been blessed over the years in selection of those we breed.  Most of the time it is not just an act of God that we have stunning children in health disposition and physical beauty, Fred and our team of veternarian's work tirelessly on DNA testing and pedigree's and my part...I add the LUV.  I spend the nights in the nursery with the mom's and even after the birth sitting with them assisting where I can and reading, singing and handling each child so they know human love along with that of their mothers. Never have I had a mother reject my support that is how I know we are on to the appropriate breeding programs.

The second litter is due about March 19th. Savannah is the precious mother. Another Champion female with many wonderful wins due to her temperament and consistency. I LUV black cockers.  Black and Black and Tan were our first cockers. Blacks have the soft expression and deep eyes that cockers are known for. Blacks also of the three varieties mature the fastest (meaning that they grow in to the cocker people desire in their hearts the soonest. Usually this is 1-1.5 years of age) Savannah is a petite lap loving cocker. I look forward to seeing her children! I know each paw will be kissed by God's love.

The third litter is being concived in PA with the help of Jessica.  She is one of Fred's dearest handler friends. We co-own Flirt with her.  We paid to have all of her testing done and her Canadian Championship.  Flirt is an oddity for me.  Why...I usually am not attracted to Parti cockers.  Not because they are not stunning as they most certainly are. But as any true honest breeder will tell you...parti's are the A.D.D. children of cocker spaniels.  This varies in degree of course from those that breed well and those that just breed but no matter the breeder parti cockers take the longest to out grow puppy.  Any where from 2-5 years. They are the "who is at the door, who is at the window, what is in the box, did you call me...did you call me...? See what I mean.  BUT on the other hand.  If ever there is a cocker that will make you smile it is a parti. Their joy comes from the feeling they give you and they live to give that feeling of ...the wind blowing on your face nonjudgmental happiness! I hope you know what I mean.

PJ is the forth mother another buff but more cinnamon in color.  She is also an American and Canadian Champion. Her children will arrive we pray safely around March 31st (she would not surprise me if she had April Fools babies as she enjoys a good joke every now and then.  She is  playful yet has an aire of dignity and responsibility about her.  She reminds me of the aurora of Lady in Lady and the Tramp. The petite, shy yet engaging way about her But do not let me misled you she will get down and dirty in a game of chase with anyone guesting at the kennel. And she will win at all she attempts.

Wait, say you that is only four.  Ah yes, and too close together if you ask my old heart...but we have to play this hand dealt by God all things in his time. Blue the 5th litter I hope will be much further out and LeAnne

(in the nursery prior to her last litter) our repeat from last year (she was bred but sadly did not hit at the right time to have pups could still be on the back burner also) So you see my husband and Holy Father are going to keep my heart to busy to mourn for very long.

I do wish to share something more with you.  In touching each of dad's things I found some things he treasured.  A handmade Father's Day card when I could first spell all the words right and sign my given name (correctly) Sandra at about 5 years old. and this letter I am going to share with you that I wrote to him two years and 10 days before my mother passed away. July 16, 1997

Dear Dad,

Thank you for teaching me:

How to open a paperback books so the binding does not break.

That roots don't grown through rocks.

That forgiving is easy if your perspective is intact. (crashing your only new car)

That Love means keeping promises and demands commitment.

That some of our greatest joy comes from serving others.

Don't sweat the small stuff and it is all small stuff.

For keeping me safe from others when I couldn't keep myself safe.

For showing Doug and I and our children and all who know you that you HONOR my Mother in your care and devotion to her.

For not teaching me to drive before Driver's Ed class so I respected you and the privilege of driving.

For the "Green Acres" paper dolls because I was quiet at a meeting you needed to attend.

For letting me come home when I've needed to be safe and for letting me leave when I've needed to be brave.

For supporting me even with my wrong decisions without too many I told you so's.

For hugging me on TV when you were honored with Channel 3's "My Favorite Teacher Award" so I'll have that memory and film forever. (those of you that have older parents especially men know that outward signs of affection are very rare.)

For showing me that the best way to overcome injustice is to rise above it and be the better person.

For playing with my pets even though you've never liked pets.

For promising to eat what ever I would cook.

For liking my knitting and telling me so (I also found gently wrapped high on a shelf with his prized possessions the sweater I made for him)

For taking us the extra miles to 4-H so I could learn how to knit.

For that I was able to teach 30 girl scouts and my own daughter to knit.

For teaching me money management, not that I am ahead but I have never been behind.

For teaching me what to keep in the trunk of my car for emergencies.

For making the play house and the stilts.

For trapping and releasing the animals in the garden and not killing them.

For teaching me the value of caring for ones possessions.

For making me a smart shopper.

For being there for me ALWAYS.

And for the millions of other things I use daily and think of you fondly for but forget to say thank you...I do so now. Love, Sandy

He simply wrote SAVE on the outside of the envelope and tucked it in the top drawer with the socks and handkerchiefs' that I embroidered lopsided K's on for him when I was 12 or 13 years old for his birthday.  Maybe later I can share with you the last letter in that trio. But for now...maybe you want to get out your own pen and paper and write your own letter to that person you admire and respect who gave all they had,... all they could, for you!

Luv YOUR, Sam

My heart is broken...on the 11th my father went to be with Jesus and my mother.  I was blessed to be with him... my brother and my children each of us having time with him. But of course even though you have a few hours there are still things that go unsaid.  I am his executor I never thought it would be so much...so many people and places to contact so many bills and things to cancel. His will to follow gifting things he chose. Cleaning and fixing the house to sell. All of that on top of a broken heart and a business to keep active. I know I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me but it still hurts. I lost mom when I turned 40 and dad at 50. Part of me wonders how long now have I. I need to get things in order so my family doesn't have the heart ache that I am facing now. My father donated over 3 gals of blood during his life. Served in the Korean war in the Navy. He taught math to 7-8 grades for over 35 years. He worked on committees to better the community and teachers rights. He cared for two ailing wives. He ran classes at the local senior center and was active in hospice groups. He donated to many local and national charities and started a charity in the name of my mother and my stepmother. He selflessly gave...a neighbor needing a water heater another needing to help send her daughter to collage. Finding little jobs for his neighbors that were out of work so they didn't have to take charity and then over paying them for the tasks. Buying meals for seniors. He has letters from former students that went on to OVER achieve and community members that thanked him for years of service.  He even taught adult education and tutored children and adults so they could graduate well. In his way, as he could, he did the best he could with what he had and knew. Thank you Daddy I miss you.

We are also hoping that the two litters we planned for spring homes will take new life often helps lessen the loss of same. OH ok I say that but now I truly feel alone.  There is something about becoming the oldest in a family line that makes you feel helpless and useless and afraid of not doing, saying or being right for self and others.

Please keep my family in your prayers and myself that I make the right choices needed in the coming days and months.

Luv Sam

Wow time to start a new year and a new page. Some of the things that you are used to seeing are still here.  Like the fun things at the bottom of the page that are always there...things to make, health tips, things to do with your dog, how we start the socialization program for our dogs that assist in making them the wonderful fur children you each write me about.

Many of you know of the health challenges facing both myself and my father.  This week he this non-smoker will have a lung biopsy. He will be on O2 for the rest of his life. And I am to carry nitro spray with me. Argh time to slow it down and take better care of me as I see I will have to repay the favor to my father of his years of caring for me. Thank you to those who have offered prayer and assistance. I love you each and all.

Yes, Gabby did get her forever home to those asking.  After about 9 applications last month I was blessed to be choosen and to chose Cassie and Alan.  They blessed me with a wonderful home for Sydney many many years ago.  I am thrilled that Gabby will be adored and luved the same way.

Fred is at the ASC Spaniel Show in PA he left with a show friend Sharon this morning and gone until Monday.  So I get to chose what to clean and do while he is gone.  Ok ladies you know what I mean it is so much easier to start a cleaning project when you can work on it when you want and how you want.

I was thankful for all of the cards/photos and emails/photos of "our" children...YOUR children. It is so great to see how they have grown and how you have grown with them.  With some of you it was hard to see where the dog child stopped and you started. Sigh my heart belongs to each of you...thank YOU!

We have spent sometime evaluating our breeding program and have written some plans out for the next 6 years.  Some say what...aren't you like "breeders" that just breed when your dogs come in season to what ever dog you have. NO...many reasons. Here are a few. The point of being a breeder is to improve the health temperament and quality of the breed. So doing the health and genetic testing, studying the dogs available to breed to and the pups they have produced and knowing why and what you are breeding for is imperative. So just like anything worthwhile you plan.  Then of course you wait...because the course of nature and God's plan come first above all. So in that vein we hope to have a wonderful litter this spring of a line we have planned for almost 6 years. I am not going to say too much because I do not want to jinx my happiness.

What was your best Christmas gift this year?  Mine (thanks for asking) for the first time in 18years I was blessed with a gift from Fred...a journey necklace and...a new 450 sq ft addition to our home incase my father chooses to live with us if not...many years ago there was a book called A room of her own...Oprah's space was in it as was many other famous and regular folks having seen that book on my shelf...Fred has given me a space of my own.  I can put my crafts in a space that will allow me to actually spend sometime creating.  See when it takes as much time to get things out to work on as the few moments that you have to create you tend not to create so what a blessing my gifting has been.  For my birthday he redid the bathroom on the lower level so that it is accessible to my father should he move in with us.

Another gift was from my heavenly Father this year.  Getting back in touch with friends and family that I had lost touch with and meeting new friends and new church family in my 50 things for others during my 50th birthday year. I am now the proud family member of two church communities due to their need and my desire to share. No one can have to much love in their life.

We are almost to the 40 Champion mark.  I think he may make it before he is 50 his goal to retire from showing and be a dog show judge.  We can not count the dogs that we did not own or put all the points on but he has substantially assisted others with their show programs. (uh oh too I appear too proud?)

For those of you in my area. I am trying to learn what phone book is most utilized...For those not in my area when you are looking for a groomer or kennel do you go on line or do you look in the phone book?  Answer here: sam@hyerluv.com

Benny weemer is doing great.  He is so much joy to my heart.  Each day he seems to know what to give me to allow my heart to keep healing after the loss of Ashley in 8/08. Fred will be seeing his breeder this weekend and I told him to tell him how much in detail this fur son means to me.

We also added a new room to the kennel last/this year.  I finished (ok I will never finish my studies in animal behavior and care) my "masters" in animal behavior I promised myself I would take to heart something I thought would benefit our guests and added a new small dog room. Some times depending on breed and breeder or gulp pet store (don't go there Sam) small dogs (any dog really) can be breed with certain emotional scars that cause them to be upset over even just the smell of a large dog or a dog that could cause them pause...having a room with dogs less than 25 pounds is a benefit to their emotional well being and enjoyment of being one of our guests.

I am working on some more articles for the Rockford Squire...you can if you would like to see some of my tips and tricks go to www.rockfordsquire.com and in search put Sam Hyer and it will bring up all of my articles for them.

Well, it is time for me to run let the dogs out (woof) Thanks for spending time with me today. Oh one more thought...if you have made a new years resolution let me know what it is and the steps your taking to make it happen. sam@hyerluv.com

Until fingers meet keys again (ah remember when it used to be until pen meets paper sigh) Luv ever and always, your Sam

Make Dog T-shirt Bed in 7 minutes

Yes, in seven whole minutes. And you can have those jazzy dog t-shirt bed for your little poochie to sunk onto.

However if you and your dog are in the mood for artistic expression, go for the ultimate. More on that later on. But first let me share with you why making dog t-shirt bed is not only a fun craft but a necessity for dog owners who had just acquired their first dog.

Dog beds made from your old t-shirts are very appealing to your small dogs especially for young dogs or puppies. It gives them a sense of you while you’re away, which in turns lessen the seperation anixety you dog might encounter. Furthermore, making your dog t-shirt bed can be emotionally rewarding, and it saves you money at the same time . The t-shirt beds can be machine-washed and dried when it becomes dirty and/or smelly.

Things you need are:

Steps in making Dog t-shirt Bed:

  1. Turn the t-shirts inside out and sew the armholes and neck hole of the shirt closed.
  2. Then turn the t-shirt with its outside out.
  3. Fill the top half of the shirt with whatever washable fillings you choose.
  4. Sew a seam across the midsection of the t-shirt just below the arms to trap the fillings in the top half.
  5. Sew another seam from the centre of the midsection seam to the bottom of the shirt, creating two sections in the lower half of the t-shirt.
  6. Stuff both sections, and then sew the bottom shut.

You have created a dog bed with three pillowed sections. Place the bed anywhere your dog likes to sleep – next to a heating vent, next to your lounge chair in the living room, in his crate, or treat it like a big cushion and place it on the sofa while both you and your dog watching TV.

Another great idea would be using toddler t-shirts and make a couple “mini-plushs” for your dog to cuddle with at night. You are only limited by your imagination. So have fun.

Your dog will love you for making them.

Okay about the ultimate thing I was talking earlier on? Basically is to add a personal touch to it. Get fabric paints (non-toxic) of your dog’s favorite colors, dip your dog’s paw slightly onto the paint then dab it onto the t-shirt. Do this before you add the fillings.

And if your dog feels like being Van Gogh for a day, by all means, have all his paws walk over the t-shirt. Add yours too!!! THANK YOU RENEE

Spaniel Ear Cleaner Recipe
__________________________

Ingredients:

White vinegar
Powdered boric acid
Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
Betadine antiseptic (or generic equivalent)

Directions for mixing the solution together:

Pour 6 ounces of isopropyl alcohol in to a plastic applicator bottle.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of boric acid powder.
Add 2 ounces of white vinegar.

Shake the solution extremely well, until the boric acid powder is fully dissolved.
Once the powder is dissolved, add one teaspoon of the Betadine antiseptic, and
shake it up some more.

Squirt the solution inside your dog's ear until the ear canal is completely full.
Massage the outside of the ear to help slosh the cleaning solution around inside.
Hold the dog still for about a minute.

Be sure to shake the solution up really well before each and every time you use it.
The boric acid has a tendency to settle at the bottom of the bottle.
Store at room temperature.

Use the cleaning solution daily until you start to see some improvement.
Gradually cut back to once per week when you are happy with the condition of the ear.
When the ear seems completely free of infection, you can go two weeks between treatments.

  Grow Old With Dogs

When I am old...
I will wear soft gray sweatshirts...
and a bandana over my silver hair.....
and I will spend my social security checks on wine and my dogs.

I will sit in my house on my well worn chair
and listen to my dogs' breathing.
I will sneak out in the middle of a warm summer night
and take my dogs for a run, if my old bones will allow...

When people come to call, I will smile
and nod as I show them my dogs...
and talk of them and about them...
...the ones so beloved of the past
and the ones so beloved of today....

I will still work hard cleaning after them,
mopping and feeding them and
whispering their names in a soft loving way.

I will wear the gleaming sweat on my throat,
like a jewel and I will be an embarrassment to all...
especially my family...
who have not yet found the peace in being free
to have dogs as your best friends....

These friends who always wait, at any hour, for your footfall...
and eagerly jump to their feet out of a sound sleep,
to greet you as if you are a God.

With warm eyes full of adoring love and hope
that you will always stay,
I'll hug their big strong necks...
I'll kiss their dear sweet heads...
and whisper in their very special company....

I look in the Mirror...and see I am getting old....
this is the kind of person I am...and have always been.
Loving dogs is easy,
they are part of me.

Please accept me for who I am.
My dogs appreciate my presence in their lives...
they love my presence in their lives......
When I am old this will be important to me...
you will understand when you are old....
if you have dogs to love too.

WARNING>>>>Be careful at your vets with your cockers.  I have had reports of two cockers from my breeding and 15 yes, I said 15 other cockers having near death reactions to the LEPTO shot that is now being used by many vets due to an out break of the disease.  BUT in my opinion....it is not worth the risk.  One of the dogs is over 6 years old and she was affliected with in hours of the injection.  The other a pup under 6 months almost DIED with in minutes of the shot.  Both events cost my families in heartache and concern but also one over 120.00 more than the appointment cost and the other almost 300.00 due to the fact they had to go to the after hours emergency vet.

WHY DOGS DON'T LIVE AS LONG AS PEOPLE

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker.  The dog's owner, his wife, and their little
boy
were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.  I told the family
there were no miracles left for Belker, and offered to perform  the
euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, the owners told me they thought it would be
good
for the four-year-old boy to observe the procedure.  They felt he could
learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family
surrounded him.  The little boy seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the
last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.  Within
a few

minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.  The little boy seemed to
accept
Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud
about the

sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.  The little
boy,
who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him.  What came out of his mouth next
stunned
me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.  He said,
"Everybody is
born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like  loving
everybody

and being nice, right?" The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals
already
know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

A very neat email came today.  It was from the author of the Valentine poem I found on the byb site. Here is her letter.  I guess it amazes me who reads my musings and rantings.  I thank you all for giving me a voice.  Even for my nonsense.

I cried when I saw you had put my poem on your website.  How did you come upon it?  I wrote it the morning of Valentine's Day and sent it to CockerFriends, a yahoo group to which I belong.  It has been two years since on 2/06/03 my darling Tsatchka left to go to heaven where she  is wagging her long tail and looking at all with wonder.  She sends me lots of poems and she remains my muse.  Thank you for posting it.  I am so grateful to have the love of animals, especially my sweet cockers.  I am from Michigan, too. I grew up in Detroit and Huntington Woods and went to high school at Interlochen Arts Acadamy near Traverse City.  Now I live in San Francisco.  Where are you located?  If I get back to Michigan, maybe for my 40th high school reunion next year, perhaps I could come and see you.

Best Regards,

THE FRISKY COCKERS FROM SAN FRANCISCO

 To all the little cockers
And other creatures, too,
  Who found their way
  Into our hearts
This poem is meant for you
It is sent with so much love
  And so many salty tears
  And sent with wonderful memories
That comfort us through the years
We are glad you came to us
And that you chose to stay
If it was for just for a little while
  Or for many happy days
  You know that we appreciate
  The special gifts you brought
And we've tried to learn the lessons
That through your lives you taught
So on this day reserved for love
  We remember you
And all the love which you gave us
A love so strong and true
And though you are far from our sight
And gone from space and time
We send to you our truest love
  And this special Valentine

A new family member sent this to me today and I thought it was really precious.  I hope that for whom ever I was meant to add this to my page for sees it and is blessed.

Although things are not perfect
Because of trial or pain
Continue in thanksgiving
Do not begin to blame
Even when the times are hard
Fierce winds are bound to blow
God is forever able
Hold on to what you know
Imagine life without His love
J oy would cease to be
Keep thanking Him for all the things
Love imparts to thee
Move out of "Camp Complaining"
No weapon that is known
On earth can yield the power
Praise can do alone
Quit looking at the future
Redeem the time at hand
Start every day with worship
To "thank" is a command
U
ntil we see Him coming
Victorious in the sky
We'll run the race with gratitude
X alting God most high
Y es, there'll be good times and yes some will be bad, but...
Z ion waits in glory...where none are ever sad!

"I AM Too blessed to be stressed!" The shortest distance between a problem and a solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. The one who kneels to the Lord can stand up to anything. Love and peace be with you forever, Amen.

This is one of the neatest stories I've ever heard.  You will know precisely what this little girl is talking about at the end!

"Danielle keeps repeating it over and over again.  We've been back to this animal shelter at least five times.  It has been weeks now since we started all of this," the mother told the volunteer.

"What is it she keeps asking for?" the volunteer asked.

"Puppy size!" replied the mother.

"Well, we have plenty of puppies, if that's what she's looking for."

"I know...we have seen most of them," the mom said in frustration...

Just then Danielle came walking into the office.

"Well, did you find one?" asked her mom.  "No, not this time," Danielle said with sadness in her voice.  "Can we come back on the weekend?"

The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.

"You never know when we will get more dogs.  Unfortunately, there's always a supply," the volunteer said.

Danielle took her mother by the hand and headed to the door.  "Don't worry, I'll find one this weekend," she said.

Over the next few days both mom and dad had long conversations with her.  They both felt she was being too particular.  "It's this weekend or we're not looking any more," Dad finally said in frustration.  "We don't want to hear anything more about puppy size either," Mom added.

Sure enough, they were the first ones in the shelter on Saturday morning.  By now Danielle knew her way around, so she ran right for the section that housed the smaller dogs.  Tired of the routine, mom sat in the small waiting room at the end of the first row of cages.

There was an observation window so you could see the animals during times when visitors weren't permitted.  Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to take a closer look.  One by one the dogs were brought out and she held each one.  One by one she said, "Sorry, you're not the one."

It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup.  The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up the dog and held it closely.  This time she took a little longer.  "Mom, that's it!  I found the right puppy!  He's the one!  I know it!" she screamed with joy.  "It's the puppy size!"

"But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the last few weeks," Mom said.

"No not size--the sighs.  When I held him in my arms, he sighed,"  she said.

"Don't you remember?  When I asked you one day what love is, you told me love depends on the sighs of your heart.  The more you love, the bigger the sigh!"

The two women looked at each other for a moment.  Mom didn't know whether to laugh or cry.  As she stooped down to hug the child, she did a little of both.

"Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh.  When you and Daddy come home from work and hug each other, you both sigh.  I knew I would find the right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms," she said.  Then holding the puppy up close to her face she said, "Mom, he loves me.  I heard the sighs of his heart!"

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the love that makes you sigh.  I not only find it in the arms of my loved ones, but in the caress of a sunset, the kiss of the moonlight and the gentle brush of cool air on a hot day.

They are the sighs of God.  Take the time to stop and listen; you will be surprised at what you hear.  "Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

 Moments in Life

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real!

When the door of happiness closes, another opens; but often times we look so long at the
closed door that we don't see the one,
which has been opened for us.

Don't go for looks; they can deceive.
Don't go for wealth; even that fades away.
Go for someone who makes you smile,
because it takes only a smile to
make a dark day seem bright.
Find the one that makes your heart smile.

Dream what you want to dream;
go where you want to go;
be what you want to be,
because you have only one life
and one chance to do all the things
you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong,
enough sorrow to keep you human and
enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily
have the best of everything;
they just make the most of
everything that comes along their way.

The brightest future will always
be based on a forgotten past;
you can't go forward in life until
you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying
and everyone around you was smiling.
Live your life so at the end,
you're the one who is smiling and everyone
around you is crying.

Don't count the years-count the memories...........

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take; but by the moments that take our breath away!

COTTON BALL REMEDY

What do you do if your puppy (or mischievous older dog) gets into your
holiday decorations and eats some of the glass ornaments? This potentially
lethal mishap can darken even the brightest holiday season.

THE PROCEDURE

BEFORE the holiday go to a pharmacy and buy a box of cotton balls. Be sure
that you get COTTON balls...not the cosmetic puffs that are made from
man-made fibers. Also, buy a quart of half-and-half coffee cream and put it
in the freezer. Should your dog eat glass ornaments.

Defrost the half-and-half and pour some in a bowl. Dip cotton balls into the
cream and feed them to your dog. Dogs under 10 lbs should eat 2 balls which
you have first torn into smaller pieces. Dogs 10-50 lbs should eat 3-5 balls
and larger dogs should eat 5-7. You may feed larger dogs an entire cotton
ball at once. Dogs seem to really like these strange treats and eat them
readily.

As the cotton works its way through the digestive tract it will find all the
glass pieces and wrap itself around them. Even the teeniest shards of glass
will be caught and wrapped in the cotton fibers and the cotton will protect
the intestines from damage by the glass. Your dogs stools will be really
weird for a few days and you will have to be careful to check for fresh blood
or a tarry appearance to
the stool. If either of the latter symptoms appear, you should rush your dog
to the vet for a checkup but, in most cases, the dogs will be just fine.

An actual experience: I can personally vouch for the cotton ball treatment.
While I was at the vet waiting for him to return from lunch a terrified woman
ran in with a litter of puppies who had demolished a wooden crate along with
large open staples. The young vet had taken x-rays which did show each of the
puppies had swallowed several open staples. He was preparing them for surgery
when my
wonderful vet came in and said no surgery. I watched him wet several cotton
balls, squeeze out the water and pop them down their throats. Within 24 hours
every staple was accounted for.

This was a lesson I learned in the mid-1960s and have had to use several
times on my brats. I wet the cotton balls and smear on some liverwurst and
they bolt it down and ask for more. The cotton always comes out with the
object safely embedded.

Our clinic did a small test on some dogs that were having ear problems. One ear was treated with traditional RX and the other was treated with the Blue recipe. Now the vets are believers and we use and provide large quantities to patients. All I can say is that if you do not have success, you did not follow the prescribed schedule far it's use. My mother was an Olympic swimmer and this was used for those that had swimmers' ear. My daughter has a Labrador that has squishy ears forever, he thinks he is an Olympic swimmer, his ears are wonderful, pink and painless now, needless to say the pool is brown now, there are 4 Labs swimming.
Sue

I followed the instructions from the website when treating my bitch's ears. Hers were in pretty bad shape too and the Allergist at Ohio State told me her ears would be chronic her entire life. I was able to keep them in OK condition as long as I followed his strict regime. Twice a day treatments. But when Jean  told us about the Blue Power Treatment on the List I decided to try. It took a couple of months of treatment and when she died about 2 years later... her ears were pink as a new baby's bottom. The last two years of her life I only treated her on a weekly basis.

Recently I clipper burned my r/w Charlie in two places on the side of his neck. I applied the Blue Violet full strength using the wand to the spots. He stopped scratching and when I groomed him yesterday the scabs fell off. I remember my mother's dogs would have dark blue spots on them from time to time. I asked what that blue stuff was for and she told me it healed sores. Of course I being ignorant laughed at her. Now I know what my Mom used and I bet anything she was laughing up  in heaven while I 'doctored' up my Charlie.

Wilma P

I also found Blue Power very effective for “cocker mouth”, I just squirt it into the infected area of the flue, and it works wonders.  Doesn’t seem to sting at all, whereas alcohol by itself is quite painful and the dog will protest.  I had one dog with infected flues so bad that they were bleeding and wasn’t able to clear it up.  I had to take him out of open obedience for a while because he couldn’t hold the dumbbell.  Cleared it up with magic Blue Power!!.    Never thought of it for clipper burn, but will try it next time.  Thanks Wilma! Cheers, Marnie

The above link I wish all of you go to and copy.  It is important for all dog owners to have this recipe.  The above people are not only show dog people but one the wife of a vet and the other a top dog show judge. I have shown this recipe before but I thought I would give you the link...

Hi again...seems that maybe Shirlee Kalstones book How to House train your dog in 7 days maybe hard to find.

I am going to give you what I learned from the book...

Dogs can be housebroken in a short time by following a simple formula...feed them regular and nutritious meals, put them on a strict outdoor walking or indoor paper schedule. Confine them at night and at specific times during the day until they can be trusted to have the run of the house. and give them plenty of praise. Canine pack relationships are based on dominance hierarchy or a descending pecking order...this is important to know on every level...this is ingrained.  they are dogs not little furry people even though we wish...

You need to let the dog know who ranks in your family...Parents then human children then DOG!

As I have mentioned before it is between the 4-5 week that dogs attain their sensory and motor abilities. Nikki gives them  less intensive care and they become independent like little toddlers. Social bonds with the siblings develop. The pups start to explore their world they test their abilities and struggle with each other to see who is pack alpha at this time. At about 5 weeks they want to keep the nest clean they want to wonder away and potty somewhere off the blanket...(nest) If you take advantage of the natural instinct of the dog house training will speed along.  Pups start out wanting to please you.  It is nature to them to seek approval and they long to be challenged with educational opportunities...this is where parents faultier.  Your need to play with cute stupid puppy doesn't nurture pup to strive.  Then when you feel pup should know better he has no desire to learn anymore as he was only requested to be cute...see where I am going here folks...

The best time to work with house training is 6-8 weeks depending on emotional stability of the pup. (IMHO) I feel the 7th week is the time to start separating parent and child. this is time for them to develop into their own personality.

One of the reasons I have always been insistent on not placing pups until after 8 weeks (10-12) is because puppies for thru a fear imprinting stage between 8-10 weeks this is an extremely important life stage...NO PUNISHMENT SHOULD BE EXTREME OR YOU WILL RUIN THIS PUPPY!!! hear me here. PLEASE...this is so important especially in sensitive parti's Do not let anyone scare or intimidate your pup!!! An experience that causes trembling at this stage could ruin a puppy for life.

Dr. Michael Fox a noted behaviorist stated " A young puppy is a highly responsible creature with an incredible capacity to explore its environment and learn new things every day. There is a critical period from 8-12 weeks of age when a puppy's inclination to explore and acquire knowledge is set. If experiences and simple training or handling is denied or limited during this early period the puppy will have a lower IQ as an adult dog"

7day training period to house or paper train includes.

1. establish regular eating habits

EAT SAME FOOD AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME PLACE (it is reassuring to them) GIVE DOG 15-20 MINUTES TO EAT THEN REMOVE UNEATEN PORTION.  THIS WILL TEACH DOG NOT TO LINGER OVER FOOD

2. confine your dog to a "den" (crate-small room) where he won't want to relieve himself.

3. Following a strict outdoor walking schedule or indoor paper schedule

WITH A PUPPY THERE IS A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME BETWEEN INTAKE AND EXPEL...GO OUT SIDE TO SPOT YOU WANT TO USE...SAME SPOT EACH TIME...NO PLAY IGNORE LET PUP POTTY.  Take dog out on a leash...this is two fold...less play and you leash train at the same time...do not yank on the leash....you will ruin dogs desire to walk nicely with you. When you are at the potty place the only time you talk to the dog is when he is done and NO PLAYING with him in the potty place. On the way to the potty place you say lets go_____what ever word you wish to use.

4. Give plenty of praise

THAT IS THE BEST PILE OF POOP IN THE WHOLE WORLD GOOD DOG.

5. Using the right kind of corrective training

6. Getting rid of odors promptly

During the 7 day period you should offer water at specific times on the schedule you create for your dog. Let him drink as much as he wants in 10 minutes then pick up bowl. Once he is house trained he can have water left out all the time.

Dogs MUST GO OUTSIDE EVERY TIME THEY WAKE UP so plan on waking earlier than he.

After every meal or snack or drink of water even one lap....

after extreme excitement or long play periods and the last thing at night before you go to bed.

If you are gone during the day be sure pup has plenty to play with so that he doesn't potty out of boredom...

When pup does his "business" out side he gets free time.  If he only does part he goes to "den" then 5 mins later try the potty again.  if he does it all free time.  This is not punishment this is learning protocol.

At about 14 weeks old pups should have the physical development to hold it thru the night.

NEVER CALL YOUR DOG TO CORRECT HIM...Spunky Come.  then bam he is punished and know that COME is a bad word... Distraction while dog is in the act is the best way to catch him.  A plastic jar with coins or nails that you shake or drop when you catch the pup in ACTION will cause them to pause enough so you grab it up CASUALLY and go to potty spot. When you find an accident take your dog over to it and say in a angry sad voice naughty dog no...allow him to smell take him to potty place for at least 5-10 minutes then den him while you clean it up (NATURES MIRACLE is a good product. Nilotex is good. white vinegar and water will also do in a pinch.

Ok well that is the way I remember it and feel about it. Luv Sam

I am taking this opportunity to share with you some questions posed to me today....

Does a new puppy need to be let out after a few hours
or can they tolerate being confined for that period of time?

....If you are home I say anytime you potty take out the dog.  I say every 2 hours. Remember what goes in has to come out so....only feed and water when you have 30 mins after to ensure they go.... A cheap paper back book is called HOW TO HOUSE BREAK YOUR DOG IN 7 DAYS....it give schedules for working persons to help with this.....

I also wondered if it is better for a young puppy to be in an enclosed
room with papers down on the floor so that he can go if needed instead of
being expected to control his bladder in a grate?

...Ah the age old question....PROBLEM if you train a pup to pee on paper NO PAPER will be sacred.  They will always potty on paper in or out of the house.  One should IMHO train the way that they eventually wish the dog to go. If you want potty on paper for 15 years go for it.  If you want it in a spot by the compost pile train in that area.....They need to learn control and to hold...BUT the bladder of a 6-8 week is smaller than 10-12 and they are really in good shape to hold it at about 6 months.

My other question concerns treats.  Can a young puppy be given treats as a
reward for positive behavior?  YES!!!!

I am concerned that their digestive systems
aren't developed enough to handle them.  Are there treats that are made
specifically for puppies?

Yes, but I prefer using CHIX or TURKEY hot dogs....

If you chop them up in to circles then cut them in to 1/4's those mini pieces in a zippy lock bag will last ages....and they are good for the dog and they are SPECIAL what I mean by that is you will ONLY GIVE THIS TREAT FOR CERTAIN BEHAVIORS....this is not a routine treat only during training periods or behaviors your trying to achieve.

A vet told me many years ago that you need to be
careful what you feed to cockers.

 TRUE...

He told me that I should never feed her
human food and that dry dog food was best.

TRUE....never feed fatty items.  They have not the system to break it down. Do not feed ONIONS....but gee cut up apple is good for them...broccoli...cauliflower...but no MCDONALD's burgers and fries... ice cream is ok but not all the time...Dry is best for the teeth...moisture allows the food to stay on the teeth and cause issues.  I am peddling OXYFRESH to folks now because I believe in the products for dental and pet care.  But any brushing of the teeth will extend the life and health of your dog....

MANY of you have ask me about a book I recommend.  For years it has been THE PERFECT PUPPY ...A READERS DIGEST PUBLISHING BOOK... WRITTEN BY GWEN BAILEY... Deb just recently found it available on line and at local book stores. Especially if your intent on having the best family member and the younger family (humans) have never had success with a pet.

Week one...the main concern at this time is to keep the children free from draft, contamination and to keep the mother calm and enjoying her task as being mom. Day 3-5 is time to do tails and dew claws.

Week two...T-touch is important as from day one.  That is getting the pups used to human touch and manipulation.  That is important not only for the socialization aspect but so that grooming and accepting children. Week two is also the time to ensure they are uniformly gaining weight and are developing normally. First worming took place.

Week three...eyes and ears start to open.  That is why your tapes were important.  They start from the beginning hearing any noises that maybe scary to dogs normally. But because we ask you to help with strange or normal noises in your home the pups see it all as routine and this will cause less emotional and physical stress.  Normally hair cuts were week two but this troupe didn't grow as fast as a black.  So week three was first hair cuts and they are safely saved for you. Each child did well.  None felt offended and this is the goal. We also did second worming and ensuring that each pup has doubled the birth weight. The children are advancing faster than I am used to. They are already to be in their own nest. (bottom of a plastic dog crate so they can walk in and out of it or should I say crawl.)

Week four...all of the babies are finding their legs. another worming for them and mother. Another face groom will happen today (8-13) and when Fred comes home I hope to stack up your kids so you can see them in a show stance. I also want to set them up in some cute photo's for those doing scrap books. Yes we are starting to walk and we are starting little noises not barks not growls but they are like little rumble noises. They are learning play from each other and mother. They also are on the wire walking that is really really good!

I have almost all of the photo's and all of the tapes...I do need to know where the butterfly toy was purchased.  WE LOVE THAT TOY!!!!

I would love to help each family with the details they wish to know so...write to me and I will take all the questions and answer them here.  And yes, all of you former families and looky loo's feel free to write also. Luv Sam

Interpreting the Scores

  • Mostly 1's A puppy that consistently scores a 1 in the temperament section of the test is an extremely dominant, aggressive puppy who can easily be provoked to bite. His dominant nature will attempt to resist human leadership, thus requiring only the most experienced of handlers. This puppy is a poor choice for most individuals and will do best in a working situation as a guard or police dog.
  • Mostly 2's This pup is dominant and self-assured. He can be provoked to bite; however he readily accepts human leadership that is firm, consistent and knowledgeable. This is not a dog for a tentative, indecisive individual. In the right hands, he has the potential to become a fine working or show dog and could fit into an adult household, provided the owners know what they are doing.
  • Mostly 3's This pup is outgoing and friendly and will adjust well in situations in which he receives regular training and exercise. He has a flexible temperament that adapts well to different types of environment, provided he is handled correctly. May be too much dog for a family with small children or an elderly couple who are sedentary.
  • Mostly 4's A pup that scores a majority of 4's is an easily controlled, adaptable puppy whose submissive nature will make him continually look to his master for leadership. This pup is easy to train, reliable with kids, and, though he lacks self-confidence, makes a high-quality family pet. He is usually less outgoing than a pup scoring in the 3's, but his demeanor is gentle and affectionate.
  • Mostly 5's This is a pup who is extremely submissive and lacking in self-confidence. He bonds very closely with his owner and requires regular companionship and encouragement to bring him out of himself. If handled incorrectly, this pup will grow up very shy and fearful. For this reason, he will do best in a predictable, structured lifestyle with owners who are patient and not overly demanding, such as an elderly couple.
  • Mostly 6's A puppy that scores 6 consistantly is independent and uninterested in people. He will mature into a dog who is not demonstrably affectionate and who has a low need for human companionship. In general, it is rare to see properly socialized pups test this way; however there are several breeds that have been bred for specific tasks (such as basenjis, hounds, and some northern breeds) which can exhibit this level of independence. To perform as intended, these dogs require a singularity of purpose that is not compromised by strong attachments to their owner.

The remainder of the puppy test is an evaluation of obedience aptitude and working ability and provides a general picture of a pup's intelligence, spirit, and willingness to work with a human being. For most owners, a good companion dog will score in the 3 to 4 range in this section of the test. Puppies scoring a combination of 1's and 2's require experienced handlers who will be able to draw the best aspects of their potential from them.

Important note from Wendy Volhard...regarding the Touch Sensitivity test - Do not use your fingernail when performing this test. Press between the finger and thumb lightly then more firmly until you get a response.
